2017 Wyoming Bear Skull
« on: July 27, 2018, 11:39:53 AM »
Here are some pics of last springs bear skull.  Note the massive skull fracture on his left side and how it effected his tooth angle.  The injury had been there for a good while.  Maybe from a fight with an even bigger bear?  I’d like to hope so!   I’m having a full body mount done and will gets pics of that posted up soon.

Yes - it green scored 20 1/16 but after the 60 day drying period and dreaded shrinkage factor it officially scored 19 and 12/16.  It finished as the number two bear in the state of Wyoming for 2017.

How did you clean the skull? Boil it? Hoping mine doesn’t shrink that much...

They used the flesh eating beetles to clean it.  I was hoping it wouldn't have shrunk up so much but after doing some research on scoring bear skulls it is common to see about 1/4" shrinkage regardless of cleaning method.  Maybe someone has some tips on how to minimize it.

Haun Taxidermy over in Thompson Falls, Montana did the work.  He's also doing the mount for me.

I think that is very true most of mine have shrunk about 1/4-3/8".

Mine is being cleaned with beetles right now. I’ve heard 1/8”-1/4” is pretty normal as well.

Yes - it green scored 20 1/16 but after the 60 day drying period and dreaded shrinkage factor it officially scored 19 and 12/16.  It finished as the number two bear in the state of Wyoming for 2017.
