New 264 Win Mag
« on: August 18, 2018, 03:57:16 PM »
Just put the finishing touches on final load development for my 264 Win Mag.  This rifle started as a 300 WM that I bought a few years ago from jackalope.  I put on a benchmark 26" 8 twist barrel and bedded it into a McMillan BDL stock.  I started with 143 grain ELD-X bullets but after several powders just couldn't get the consistent results I was after.  Changed course and tried the 140 Berger VLD behind H4831SC and hit paydirt.  I'll be toting this gun to Montana this fall for deer and antelope.  The 140 VLD ripping along at 3100 fps should be just the ticket.

Final load is 59.5 grains of H4831SC seated 0.010 off the lands.  This is the 200 yard confirmation test before I zeroed. Taking it out to 600 to confirm drops soon.

A great and under rated cartridge! Congrats and good luck, but be careful where you hit the antelope!

With all the new 6.5's hitting the scene I thought it will be cool to breathe some life into one of the original western hunting cartridges.  I'm going to try to put that VLD right into the crease!

Yes.  With the 143 ELD-X I started with Retumbo.  I could get 3200 fps but it was a bit erratic.  I have not tried Retumbo with the 140 VLD and I'm sure I could easily get 3200 fps.  I'm happy with where things are at for now.  At 3100 fps I have 1800 fps and 1000 ft lbs of energy at 1,000 yards....probably more than good enough for my intended use I suppose.

Love the 264 almost built one but settled on the 6.5stw.
Thing is a monster and loves the eldx with the same barrel and twist rate as yours.
You might try 869. I tried a bunch of my regular powders and didn’t have good luck now it’s .25/.50 load all day long.

I hope this rifle will help fill a few shelves in the freezer and fill up some wall space with horns.

I almost gave up on her and was on the verge of a 6.5x284 barrel but she seems to be tamed down now and behaving.
