Whitetail Population West of the Cascades
« on: October 21, 2007, 08:13:21 PM »
I know the Columbian Whitetail is on the endangered list but Oregon issued some tags for the Roseburg area.  I wonder how the population is doing in Western Washington.  Has anyone seen any or have information?

As far as I know there aren't any whitetails on the westside of the cascades.

My Mother lives in Roseburg and has whitetail in her yard all the time.  I'll get some photos.

I have heard of them being spotted in other places than the Columbia Refuge. It wouldn't surprise me if there were, but I would guess they are still just the Columbias.

An informative website shows their habitat stretching into Snohomish county, but I've only heard of them being seen as far North as the Cowlitz River these days.

I may contact the game dept. and see if there are any around King county and if there is anything I can do to enhance there habitat.

Wow, new to me...never knew white-tailed deer existed on the west side of the state.

By the way Roseburg has Oak trees everywhere.  Perhaps thats why there are Columbian whitetail everywhere in that area.  I guess if you'd like to hunt whitetail on the west side then plant more oak trees.

Palmer, if you get a chance sometime go down to Julia Butler Hansen, we go annually. I've seen up to two dozen buck's in a day, some really nice whitetails down there during the Summer and Fall.

the southeast corner of this state has little if any oak trees, yet is loaded with whitetails. hmmm...wonder what tree the whitetails sprouted from there.
