Looking for more elk and less wolves
« on: March 17, 2009, 05:18:46 PM »
Frustrated Idaho elk hunter looking for input on new areas to bowhunt elk. Have spent a few years hunting the Avery/ St. Joe river drainages and I am disgusted with the amount of wolves and brush in the unit. I am of course not asking about anyones "honey hole" but would like maybe a general hint to a few new units with a little more open terrain and much less wolf activity. Any help would be much appreciated.

I hear you. I used to hunt Clarkia, Bovell, Freezeout, but not this year. Once I have some wolf tags predator hunting will be on the agenda for some payback. But until then, no more tags from my bank account.

According to a few there are hardly any wolves around Avery and the elk hunting is incredible.  :chuckle:

If someone has a honey hole where the wolves haven't eaten everything... they are probably going to keep awfully quiet about it.. I know I am ;)

you could always apply for special permits in the owyhees but those are long draw odds, i saw quite a few elk in unit 39 deer hunting this year and also during the late archery up there but i wasnt up there for the elk season so i dont know what the elk do when they become the primary targets im sure they find a hole and hide out real well
