I think the original intent of this thread was about guys calling elk prior to season and not hunting them, thus educating them. It drives me crazy as well but it is their right to do as they want.

Me personally, I wanna hunt the elk that are responsive. So I'm going to cover alot of ground trying to find one who is. I'm not looking for a possibility of finding an elk, I want one who will talk back! The ones that are heated and a bit horny.

Exact same way I hunt cougars. Exact same!!
perzactly, you only need one, call a lot, cover a lot of ground, and your odds go up. Or just do what ever you like, and be happy to be able to do it.

I cannot find the popcorn emoji , but just to  :stirthepot: :
I met a guy in early August.
Or, should I say, I heard him?
.
He was bugling, full out, beautiful 3 note calls...
You know, just like you practiced at the red lights...
.
I had never met this guy, and been hunting this gate for the last 3 years, so I found him and said hello.
He brought up his calling, bragged about the bulls he was seeing, even talked about ones he heard, but did not see.
I thought he was an idiot, but asked him if he thought it educated the elk, he replied, "I hope it does, the next time they come say hello, I am going to shoot the one I want"
Then showed me pictures of elk he has killed.
Claims they get used to hearing his bugle, and think the reason they did not meet before was due to whatever spooked them, not the other elk.

I don't call until I am hunting, but have met a lot that do.
That's the problem with scouting.
Spen 3 months patterning an elk herd, then have 3 guys on mountain bikes show up at daylight putting on a show.

There is wisdom in Cryders words, though maybe a bit extreme, lol.   90% of you guys call too much, but keep doing it, because when I actually have trouble telling whether its real or not(usually not very often), its my next flag that its some dude.

and yes, shutting off the diesel and slamming the door prior to letting one rip is always fun entertainment.  I sometimes will answer just to keep things interesting and to keep the spirits up for some greenhorn.  They are sure to show up on here and report they are screaming.

I'm not an expert but the Born and Raised crew put on a clinic calling 100's of times a day and kill Rosie's in bunches.  I will be emulating their approach, since, you know, it works!

:yeah: YouTube stars bugle every minute and only kill monsters. So that's what I'm going to do!  :chuckle: bought a whole pile of all the popular calls, the biggest bugle tube I could find and mounted a hoochie mama on each hip. Havent practiced with any of them. But come opening morning the elk will come a running!

I'd say you spent too much money on all that mess and I have no idea how you use a hoochie mamma when it's mounted to your hip.  You must do yoga.
I know I've lost it, let me know if you come across it

I know that guy
He lived across from me and spent hours calling every year in his yard
We used to call him “full draw”
Every story he ever told
“ I was at full draw but he was a smaller 6x so I passed “
He’s an xpeart 😆

Went out scouting with a friend 2 weeks ago and slapped a call out of his hand that he was about to blow on. Told him don't educate them!

Most hunters don't call or are afraid to. Not sure why, it's your best bet at finding them to hunt them. Unless you have a lot of time to scout and spot and stock bulls you have already located prior to the season, you best bet is learning to locate by calling then the hunt is on. Lots of good calling info on YouTube ;)

Yes...but only if you don’t kill em!!

So by the numbers 90% are educating them in season since only 10% kill 😂😂😂😂

I think some are giving these critters to much credit. most of us are hunting the first legal elk that we find, and the 2.5 to 4.5 year old ones are the ones that we are getting. This age class of bull, although not dumb is fairly tough to educate to the point that they can't be called in while they are rutting. On more than one occasion  i have called the same bull in multiple times in the same season, it's all about finding one that is ready. Now on the other hand when we start talking about the older, and more mature animals they are very well educated, by life. The bull that lives long enough to become a solitary animal when not rutting, is the bull that is very easily educated, but lets face it he is not the one most of us are hunting.

So what you're saying is...  Sex-crazed males, no matter the species, can be readily lured into their own demise?
