First time hunter looking to learn
« on: August 26, 2018, 04:34:09 PM »
I am a new hunter hoping to find someone willing to take me along on a modern firearm deer / elk hunt. I’m in my late forties, didn’t grow up around hunting but  have spent time in the woods camping & fishing and am familiar with firearms. I have really felt called to hunting the last couple of years and just don’t have hunters in my circle of friends.

I’m willing to come along and learn through observation but would prefer to find someone who’d hunt with me.  I’m ok hunting for a day or a hunting out of camp for a week.

I’m self contained and all set as far as gear, camper, SUV, etc, and can certainly help with pre-hunt scouting or in other ways.

I get that this is a pretty big ask, taking a newbie into the field, but I’m asking none the less. :-)

Feel free to PM if you have questions or advice. I appreciate it.

Robert

Welcome to the forum. I am an archery hunter so can’t help with elk but depending on what happens, I could possibly help with a late whitetail hunt. Where are you from..

Thanks for the welcome. I live in Renton but I’m willing to travel. Where are you planning to go after whitetail?

I won't be hunting but I have another buddy who is looking to kill his first big game animal. It would be up in NE corner

Dang, wish my hunting wasn't so booked up this year already!

I'm not sure where you're at financially but you might consider giving @BuckCanyonLodge a call.  Rick has very competitive rates for semi-guided hunts.  It's in the NE corner where there are more animals per square acre than square mile around us (ok, maybe not entirely true but it feels like it).  Your fee basically makes it so all the burden of scouting, food, etc. is on them, and you just have to get out there and hunt.

If you don't find a partner and he has an open slot, I would consider it.  It's a small fee to basically have someone with several decades of hunting behind him help you understand the animals, the techniques, etc just a little better.

Thanks all for the responses and PM’s. It looks like I’ll be arranging some hunts for both seasons.

I appreciate the advice and generosity. This is a good group here.

I’m in exactly the same boat.  I could have writer your post but I’m an eastsider.  This will be my second season.  I love hearing of others taking up hunting later in life.  It’s a real challenge when you don’t know any hunters.  If you end up hunting NE let me know.  Maybe we can compare notes.  I’ve toyed with the idea of doing a blog or YouTube channel documenting my journey to help show others it’s not undoable.
