Best day this season!
« on: December 16, 2018, 10:56:22 PM »
Had my best day this season yesterday (Sat 15th).
I had 2 cripples manage to get airborne again before I could get to the boat to chase them down. And missed 2 good chances at ducks cause there was another hunter set up 100 yards out in front of me and they were out of the blind moving decoys at the time and the bird were directly between us.
Pile of widgeon were in. Thats nearly all I saw all day besides a couple bufflehead and few mallards.
No complaints here. Once the other hunters in the area left the birds started rafting up by where they were set up. They had a big river boat anchored out there a ways and kayaked from it to their hunting spot, so that big obvious boat out there kept the birds coming farther back the slough to me. One of those days that made me wish I could have hunted for the next week straight haha.
I had always been shooting Kent 3" #3s since they pattern well for me. But upon hearing several guys raving about using #1 I tried a box. I am for sure picking up more. Loaded them every other shell all day. The 2 cripples I lost were with the #3s. And the other birds that I got with the #3s either needed their necks wrung or needed another shot before I could get to them. Every single bird I hit with the #1 were lights out on the spot.
Might go back to the good ol #2s to split the difference but we will see. Shot #2s for years till I started shooting Kent and the #3s patterned well.

Looks like an awesome day. I’ve always stuck with #2s and a modified choke!
