Taking a tag along

Not sure i posted this in the right area but, my borther eant to come visit this fall during deer season and want to tag along with me a few days while I hunt, to maybe learn a few things before he goes out on his own hunt in Wa. He will not have a lisence or tag as we wont be hunting himself. Is there any issue with this  if we run into fish and game. I will be hunting in Idaho if that matters. I would assume that as long as the weapon is on my control the whole time it shouldent be an  issue, but you never know...

I have an anecdote which might inform your decision:

Several years ago, we had a 13 year-old exchange student from Spain spend the summer with us.  My son was 15 at the time.  The exchange student loved fishing while my son could care less.  Since both my wife and I were working at the time, the two boys had the days to themselves.  To fill the time, they would walk to the local lake and the exchange student would fish while my son was bored out of his skull.  He would sit next to the exchange student, they would talk, he would read, text his friends, etc.  He never participated in fishing whatsoever.  One of these times, a WDFW officer came along checking for licenses.  The exchange student didn't require one because of his age, but my when my son didn't have a license he was issued a citation despite other people on the dock confirming that my son had never done any fishing, let alone touch the fishing rod.

When we followed up with his superior officer, we were told we could fight the citation or we could simply purchase a license ($15 IIRC) and the citation would be forgiven.  As much as the injustice of the situation made us want to fight it, it was simply cheaper time- and cost-wise to by the license.  I can't say if an adult would be extended this same option should the two of you encounter an enforcement officer, but I'd say read the regulations with the strictest interpretation and decide if you need or want to cover your butt by having your brother purchase a license.

Thanks everyone. I called Idaho fish and game and they confirmed what's been said here. As long as he is Not in possion of the weapon we are good to go.

Now as far as my brother learning, hopefully it wont be mostly from my mistakes But i havent seen him in about 4 years so the company will be nice regardless.

Isn't Idaho an open carry state? Why would he be barred from carrying a weapon in the woods tagging along with you? Just asking not trying to stir the pot.

True, but I'd rather err on the side of caution. Sidearm sould be no problem I would imagine, but if he was carrying a rifle it could be used as an argument that he was actively hunting himself

Such term does not include stalking, attracting, searching for, or lying in wait for, any wildlife by an unarmed person solely for the purpose of watching wildlife or taking pictures thereof.

I don't know about other areas in Idaho, but the fish and game officers we have had contact with where we hunt have been outstanding guys. They gave us tips on where to find access, cleared up some questions on their trespassing laws for us, and were just down to earth common sense guys. They appreciated us having our ducks in a row and being forward and willing to talk. Just don't act shady, and there won't be any problems. They understand that not everyone hunts, but people like to go sometimes. If you couldn't have a tag along, then all these guys that draw super tags and go hunting with their whole posse would be in trouble.

Thanks again guys, what 7mmfan wrote above has been my experience here in Idaho. Very helpful and plesant as long as your not doing anything your not supposed be.

Now its time to get plans A B C and D finalized, organize my gear, and hit the range one last time. Then we wait...

Exactly, as long as he doesn’t pursue, fire upon or kill any animals he can carry any legal weaponry in the woods. The 2nd amendment says so. People are too afraid to exercise their rights in this country anymore and in Washington I wouldn’t blame most people but if you come over here to the free state of Idaho they still allow it

I think it would be fair to say that NOPE meant he agrees with everyone else that nope no problem tag along would be fine.
