Sitka Blacktails
« on: January 15, 2019, 11:07:12 AM »
I’m currently in the very early phases of planning a Sitka Blacktail hunt for 2020, I think I want to go early(August)and hunt Prince of Wales island. My current plan is fly to Ketchikan and catch a float plane to one of the forest service cabins on the island. All of that being said I have a few questions for anybody with experience on the island

1) What elevation does the alpine start at on POW? Looking at aerial maps it appears to be around 2000’ is that about right?
2)As I understand it Nonresidents are restricted to only hunting from August 16th on. I have seen comments in other places that it really isn’t worth going after the 16th due to the fact that all of the bucks will be out of the alpine and in the thick timber due to resident hunting pressure. Any truth to this or would I still be able to find some unpressured animals by flying in and staying away from the road system?
3)Bureau of Indian Affairs lands? Are they open to hunting? Is there a permit one would need or are they completely off limits?

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice you can give in these areas. I’m just trying to determine if POW is the best route to go in August or if I should pivot to Kodiak or maybe try to hunt in November on POW.

I've not hunted there - but I've fished POW many times in August, so I would suggest bringing some fishing gear as well in the event you tag out early; August is a great time to fish up there.
