If you had 4-days
« on: September 17, 2018, 12:31:53 PM »
Hypothetically speaking  ;) if you had 4-days to head out for the high hunt starting on Saturday, which wilderness area would you choose? I've got vacation time to burn and a pass from my wife to hit the hills. Gear or fitness are of no issue here. I've been scouring On-X, Mt Baker Wilderness is probably the easiest wilderness access but has the potential for a wonderfully wet time. Lake Chelan looks enticing, but might be shut down due to wildfires, same goes for Glacier Peak? Pasayten has always called me, but access to the wilderness boundary appears to make getting in the wilderness a longer haul, plus it's a much longer drive.

I'll be heading out solo and ideally would find a spot to camp and hunt from there each day. Not afraid of moving camp though. Also willing to partner up if anyone is interested Saturday through Tuesday.

Baker would allow for more hunting time but deer numbers aren’t great and visibility can be poor/weather can be nasty.

I’ve looked at Lake Chelan too but have never made it over there.

Glacier peak has some great country,  pockets of animals and decent access.

Pasayten is awesome but anywhere near a trail head will be packed with hunters. And like you said trail and packing will limit your hunting.

GP would be my choice
People get offended at nothing at all. So, speak your mind and be unapologetic.

Have you had the chance to get boots on the ground in any of them (even if just hiking)?  With only a 4 day window, especially at the end of the season, I would favor locations you're already familiar with.  Simply knowing the terrain can give you a massive advantage in the high country.

If this will be your first time to any of the areas, I would pick a spot that gives you relatively easy (i.e., on a trail) access to open country where you can get set up on a high point and glass.  You're likely to see other hunters, but that's the nature of the beast...
"master" hunter - still a noob.

A trip or two to the Glacier Peak area. While I want success, I'm more or less after access to the wilderness and doing my best to stay dry. Mt Baker I've been around some, but only for the purpose of climbing Baker and Shuksan.

I'm totally going in anywhere with the mindset that this is a 4 day backpacking trip that my rifle just happens to be tagging along for.
