what exactly is a "magnum" round?
« on: September 20, 2018, 09:47:17 AM »
I keep seeing outdoor ranges with signs "we no longer allow magnum rounds" . is this only rounds that are like 357 magnum, or does it also include rounds that are .___ win-mag? we have 308 and 243, are they magnum?

I’d guess that would be best answered by the range master

Yes a energy designation would have been a better than the "Magnum" designation as there are a number of high energy cartridges that do not wear "Magnum" in there name and a number of "Magnums" that do  not have more energy than standard rounds like the 256 Win Magnum, 5.6x50 Magnum and the 240 Weatherby magnum.

I think as mentioned above the range master will have to be the decision maker.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

If it is an outdoor range, it is probably referring to rifle caliber magnums not pistol.  :twocents:

Unless there's a list somewhere, I think it means that whoever wrote that didn't understand what he was writing.

You can't shoot a 223 Winchester Super Short Magnum, but go and blast away with your 500 Nitro.

Either that or they knew full well that the term "Magnum" is subjective and rather than try to make a list of every possible cartridge/caliber that is not allowed, and they expect their range masters to decide case by case what does and does not qualify as a "Magnum" round?  :dunno:

I can make them regret that decision pretty quick.
