Gun Stock Checkering
« on: October 01, 2018, 07:49:06 PM »
Anyone know of anybody that does the checkering on a wood stock. I had a gun stock get scratched pretty bad a few years ago, and plan to sand it down and refinish it in the area that was damaged. It happens to be right through the lower portion of checkering by the Grip. It is an older Ruger M77 30-06. I live in Gig Harbor. Any help is appreciated.

Until having someone look at it I would refrain from sanding it.  Recheckering and fixing the scratch would be easier if basing off the original pattern.

On another note, unless the gun has some personal significance, having someone rechecker it is going to cost a lot more than the stock is likely worth. I estimate a minimum of $100 and possibly more for a minor repair.

Yeah, I have considered just replacing it. Most of the damage is outside the checkering, just creeps into the checkering a bit. There is a lot more damage in the wood with no checkering. That is the area I had planned to sand and refinish. Thank you for the insight.
