Wyoming Antelope
« on: September 25, 2018, 05:21:44 AM »
Just returned from my annual pilgrimage to hunt antelope in Wyoming.  Filled one of two doe tags with a single shot at 350 yards.  There were two antelope together and I had a chance to shoot the second one as well but missed.

If you get the meat cooled and processed quick, antelope is some of the best eating.

I leave in 4 days, I cannot wait. Chasing antelope in Wyoming is one of the best weeks of the year.

I'm jealous, no tags this year but should have a near certain draw next year.

No over the counter tags but there are always leftovers in a few units that you can buy, even now. But the units with leftovers are 99% private land, where you are likely to need to pay a landowner to access private land.

If people want a fun hunt speed goats is definitely up there. My dad had a tag that opened 9/20. We had my brother, brother in law, 2 nephews, my dad and myself. Great weekend with family. Lots of goats, wildlife and views. My dad wasnt picky he just wanted a buck and to have his grandsons there for the adventure.

We were in a checkerboard unit and OnX was key.

Yeah he is very helpful, we stopped and chatted with him last year. if I shoot even a decent representative buck he will be getting it to do the work!

if anyone is in the area, we will be camped at the buffalo KOA, staying in a 12x20 alaknak tent, feel free to stop by!

Just came through Wyoming, two routes.  Rut is hot, lots of them will scattered.  Look for the single bucks, probably thumped by others, but very good individuals.

Cousin and I went back for our first antelope trip. Had doe tags and buck tags in separate units. Ended up filling all the tags. My 3(4 in 2 weeks) year old son got to tag along. Cousins buck was a pretty nice one. I got a little antsy after the kid had an accident overnight and shot the 1st buck out of camp day 2. All in all a fun hunt and I’m already planning to go back next year

For the most part units with a lot of public access and farther west require a 5-10 points. Others with difficult access and farther east can be drawn as 2nd choice. My cousin and I were hunting a 2nd choice unit. Honestly we didn’t know what to expect but there are piles of antelope anywhere you go back there, so just get a tag and go
