any advice on hunting CleElum area?
« on: September 26, 2018, 08:16:37 AM »
I was thinking about trying the eastside this year and have been directed to the cleelum area for WT. is this decent advice and any input on the area? I just want to find a spot up where i can actually use my spotting scope instead of not being about to see 10 feet, and wait.
Thanks

By "WT" do you mean whitetail? Cle Elum would not be a good place to look for whitetail at all. Its all mulies. There is some decent ground to use a spotting scope both north and south of Cle Elum and the farther east you go the more things open up. Deer numbers aren't that great though. I elk hunt in the area and I havent seen a legal buck for the last several years. I used to see one or two around while archery or ML elk hunting.
Fish hard, hunt harder!

Yea I'd steer clear of the whole area as a newbie. Deer populations aren't the greatest and tough to hunt even if you know the area well.

You already live close to good hunting. Grab a mountain bike and get behind some gates around north Shelton. Or head further west towards wynoochee.

No white tail up there.
All mule Deer.
I bow hunted there for many many years as a kid. If You enjoy camping go for it, if You want a chance at harvesting an animal go somewhere else. Sorry but it's the truth.
Long ago it was not uncommon to see 20 Deer in a days hike. Now your lucky to see a single Deer. It makes Me very sad to think that the place I learned to hunt is now a waste of time. I hope it comes back to what it once was, in My lifetime.

All the wanna be, crazies from the westside try and hunt there with their new freeway, jacked up, shiny trucks. AVOID at all costs. :chuckle:

Well I don't recall ever seeing a white tail out of countless Deer I saw or that My family harvested. Just checked the regulations and 335 is not listed under whitetail?
Only under Mule Deer.

I've been watching a group the last few year's and each year there's a fawn or two,in the area they almost outnumber the mule deer.

There is one problem, with small isolated populations of WT. One Bluetongue outbreak and that small band of WT are just history. JMTCW

There are a few around up there, but not enough to target unless you have intimate knowledge of them. I've seen them multiple times further downriver in the Canyon between E-Burg and Selah, as well as in the farmlands just downriver of Green Bridge and Thorp. It would be a hop and a skip for them to be in Cle Elum.
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.
