Quail, Chukar Or Hun On The 10/6 Opener?
« on: October 02, 2018, 02:18:46 PM »
My favorite month is October and its first E. WA upland opener is the one for Ca. quail, chukar and gray partridge this coming Saturday. Anyone have any BIG plans?

Me...I'll most likely be on a semi-goof off walk with the 5 month old GSP puppy (Clara Belle), the 28 Ga. and the wife for quail and Huns.

I look forward to the quail/chukar opener more than any other day of the year. I'll be revisiting this area on Sat, then hitting another chukar spot Sun.

I shoot trap with a guy that shoots a Cynergy combo.  I am not sure why they never took off.  I like the design and how they handle.  That being in 28 I'm sure that is a nice pointing gun

I’ll be elk hunting Saturday morning but hoping to make it back in time to take the labs out for an evening limit of quail. I killed 140 last year and want to beat that number this year.

A lot of quail this season.  Some triple batches even.   I've also been hearing and seeing tons of Huns.   I should have got out for pics before you guys scared them up and shot em all, but oh well

I was glassing for deer this AM at the top of a barren slope overlooking a huge sage flat. I was glued to my binos when I herd this weird chirping/clucking sound right nearby. I lowered my binos and a whole covey of huns was about 20ft in front me. They immediately flushed and I about soiled my shorts. Pretty cool! If I wasn't deer hunting I would get payback on those guys.

That is great news. My dad has mentioned that he has been seeing way more quail that he usually sees by this time of the year. He is over by Moses Lake.

Day was a bust for me.  Not a single bird or shot fired.  Found people in my normal spot, which there never is.  And the adjacent land owner had all his cows on the public land, trampling all over the bird habitat.  I'll try a different spot tomorrow.

Found good numbers of chukar and huns for the opener. Even a covey of quail in the high lonesome. Not a single person around. So nice having the feeling of being the only person hunting thousands of acres public land. Definitely not some place I would bring anyone I like. 12 miles of boot time and worth it

I have seen a small Bull Snake, harmless. I heard from a friend that his friends dog was bit today by a Northenr Pacific.  Looks to be a dry strike, but still out there.

Ok. Whats a northern pacific for us non snako guys? After reading all this its sad, nobody mentions pheasants anymore. There was a day when quail were not even shot at because there were so many ringnecks.

By Northern Pacific he means a rattlesnake. Pheasant season hasn’t opened on the eastside yet but they aren’t as plentiful as they used to be, mostly due to loss of habitat.

Bingo on the snake. My GSP was bit last year outside of the Tonasket area.  While they as less lethal than most they still release a hemotoxin that can kill. Compared to Mojave Greens and the Western Diamond Backs they are much smaller species. I have had encounters with all three. Being from Cali and hunting Arizona quite a bit, I became used to them and did not fear.  Dry strikes are not uncommon with dogs.  Regardless, be careful.

Thanks for the update. I saw quite a few last year , about the third week of October. All high desert chukar hunting. Waiting for a freeze here, young dog.
