Last minute Kahlotus questions
« on: October 08, 2018, 05:53:19 AM »
I got drawn for the second deer tag in Washtucna and I think I have my area narrowed down to Kahlotus.  I'm not looking for specific info, just have a couple questions.

I plan on finding some feel free to hunt land near Mesa that is rather large.  I just want people's opinion on whether I should expect to see deer there.  Ive never actually been anywhere near there so I'm curious what the chances are on seeing deer.  Looking at the game dept's website, it simply says small and big game.  But there's not much else to go off of. Is there a relatively decent chance of seeing deer or should I Look elsewhere?

Also, the accessWA site doesn't talk much about how to access feel free to hunt land.  Am I supposed to park on the side of the road and hop the fence?  Or, generally speaking, are there parking areas at these kinds of places?  I plan on calling the game dept too but I thought id seek advice here first.

That is one unit I have actually had farmers answer the phone on the "hunting by written permission only" signs. I bet if you can get someone to answer the phone, you'll get permission on ground that yields deer. May give this a try if your plan A doesn't work out.

If you're talking about the mesa lake game ground, I'd look somewhere else. I spend a fair amount of time there bird hunting and have seen a couple deer in 3 years. There are more deer killed in the canyon north east of mesa. It runs all the way from mesa to connell and about 3/4 of it is public. If you look at some satellite stuff you'll see where the food plots are. They're run by pheasants forever. I'd hit those in the mornings/evenings and poke around the benches up the canyon walls mid day.

There's a ton of feel free to hunt/state/DNR ground out around kahlotus too. Its all checker boarded ib with private ground, so something like on-x maps works great. Some of the "public" stuff is landlocked though.

The feel free to hunt stuff around here works like this. If you can drive to it, park on the edge wherever you want and walk in.

You should be able to find one on ffh hunt land out near there or closer to kaholotus  there, it is getting harder to find that land anymore though... most ffh spots either have no fences or park at a the gate or cattle guard to access has been my experience. Like said above if that doesn't pan out some farmers will answer around there but some only give out a certain number of access permits and may be out or not give anymore out. calling this week may be a good idea.

I've found some productive land ffth that isn't even posted on the internet.

I've shot more does off DNR than I have FFTH land.

When is that tag good for?
