Backcountry Mule Deer Guys
« on: October 11, 2018, 04:13:25 PM »
What's your deciding factor to take a rain jacket/gear with you? I'll be going in about 5 miles tomorrow to set up for Saturday. Normally I'm pretty risk-averse and will pack the extra weight. But the forecast looks so nice that since I'm only going in for a couple days, then coming back later in the week for my full trip, that I'm tempted to leave it. I'll be between 6200-7000' as well.

If I'm staying in the woods and don't have a warm cabin or trailer to come back to, I would bring it. It may be a nice forecast but, we all know how that goes around here.

I take a lightweight rain jacket no matter how nice the forecast is, it’s the mountains. If it’s calling for any precip at all I’ll take my slightly heavier jacket (chugach) and pants

Rain gear always for me.  It doesn't weigh enough it take up enough volume to be a problem.  It's just another layer for me.

I don't usually take rain pants as I wear wool and it works "well enough" unless it pours but I can't ever think of a time I didn't have at minimum a lightweight rain jacket in the pack. The weight is minimal and it sure beats being soaking wet.

I bought some ultra light cheaper rain gear for just this exact scenario.... weather forecasts are not very accurate in the mountains.

I ALWAYS have the rain jacket in my pack even in archery season, and depending on forecast bring either gaiters rain pants or both. rarely do I head into the backcountry without atleast one of those
