t/c encore scope ring/hammer/thumb clearance
« on: March 19, 2009, 08:27:46 PM »
i know there's a couple of guys on here with encores. i don't want to use a hammer extension for fear of breaking the hammer. it happens, and t/c won't warranty it. i have leupold dual dovetails medium height and i still can't fit my thumb in between the scope and hammer. i don't think i have fat fingers  8) but maybe i do. do i go to a high ring? the scope still sits real low with medium rings. i tried a weaver medium height, same deal. i'm curious to know what you guys that have these guns are doing. i could live with it the way it is right now, but would rather get it working smoothly to where i don't have to worry about smushing my thumb between the hammer and scope.
the scope is a nikon 4.5-14x40sf buckmaster...which doesn't seem to be oddly shaped or anything.
help!!

I use a hammer extension made of aluminum. I got it off ebay. I figure it will brake before the TC hammer  :dunno:

i just took the medium rings back and swapped for some high rings. i'll try them. that gun handles differently than a bolt gun so i don't think the high rings will be an issue.
the other thing i learned is that worrying about the warranty is pointless because it is not valid to a 2nd owner anyway.

Jackelope, my encore 460 barrell has the t/c scope on it and I have no problem w/ hammer/ thumb clearance, is the 15" encore pistol barrell tho, maybe a diff there? As far as 2nd owner warranty I thiunk u will find t/c stands behind their prods. no matter what owner u are, Robo and I discovered that with his smokepole when we learned triple 7 is hotter than reg black powder, they replaced his hawkins stock that cracked and just said don't use that in that gun! He also just got a black diamond that had a stripped sling screw, they said send stock back and they will replace it. I think that is pretty good for a co. to stand behind their prods. nowadays, just my   :twocents: and hopefully some info for u.......

thanks big iron.
i bet the difference is the scope. i put the high rings on last night and they will work like a champ. the scope is not high at all either due to the design of the rifle....so i'm a happy camper.
thanks again.

One other option is you can send your frame into TC and for $65 they will install the Pro-hunter swing hammer and send it back to you.

No, you can send any firearm to and from the manufacturer without going through an FFL.

Your warrenty is good no matter how many transfers. TC has been awesome to deal with...
I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me to.

My son has a prohunter with the swing hammer and it works pretty damn slick. I am going to send in my encore and have it done, I have owned a TC for more than 20 years and have always had good luck with them. As far as waranty I just bought a used 10" 222 remington barrel and the extractor is broke, I called TC and they told me to remove the extractor and mail it back and they will send me a new one free of charge.

Little late, but thanks for starting this Jackelope,

Picked up my Encore tonight, threw a 3x9 on the leupold medium rings that came with it and started freaking out over the same lack of clearance.. Nice to know someone dealt with the same scenario and found a good fix

I actually changed it up a little. I know have the Bellm TC's hammer extender on it along with the heavier hammer springs they recommend. It is THE solution for the clearance problem if you ask me. You just got to put the heavier hammer spring in it to prevent misfire. The additional weight of the hammer extender, as little as it is, could cause a misfire. It took me 10 minutes tops to install those 2 things, and another 5 minutes to install their oversized hinge pin. You also should make sure the 3 set screws are tight on the extender now and then. My gun's a tack driver and my go to rig now.
