407 Unit--Help me please.
« on: October 15, 2018, 09:42:52 AM »
I like to know if anybody got anything in 407 GMU this last weekend? looking for tips where to go in  this unit. Been out by silver lake area but the dogs keep barking all the time. Please help this hunter who has not harvested an animal in 9 seasons.

407 is a hard unit to hunt with a firearm.
Byod Iversons black tail trophy tactics 2 is a must read. If your set on modern best  to the next unit east...  more land...

If you have been hunting a public piece get to know it really well. I've drawn rough maps where deer trails and road go and intersect. Stay off hwy sized game trails and go down wind of them on fainter trails.

Walk super slow through timber and use binoculars. They are best kept on a bino harness.

Good luck!

In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

 :yeah:

What he said, you would be amazed at how little cover it takes to hide a Blacktail. Blacktails will literally stand (or bed) in cover and watch you walk by, this is where the binoculars come in handy and are a must for the brush. If you are seeing fresh sign slow down and glass, glass, glass. Best of luck to ya!

When I switched from modern to Archery the ammount of animals i saw went up exponentially. Part of it is season, but a HUGE part of it is just slowing down. There is something about the change in mindset between sniping an animal at distance and sneaking up on him. I would bet that if i went back to modern I would still see lots of animals. Iverson talks a lot about it in his book and many of the deer he too with his rifle was at super close range. Well within bow range 2c.
