Westside late muzzleloader Elk
« on: November 17, 2018, 09:43:49 PM »
My son and I are new to hunting the westside and need some advise on where is the best place to go for the late muzzleloader hunt.  Not looking for trophies just want to see some elk and get a chance to tag our first elk.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all

Not many units open for that hunt. Spend some time looking at maps of open GMUs to find spots that are public (state or federal or open access) and then drive there and look for elk sign. Typically it’s hit or miss cause the elk are currently there or next door on private land. Usually units that or open to anterless have lots of private land and fewer elk but if you find the elk on land you can hunt there, you have a good chance of getting one. Units that are 3point min usually have lots of public land but not a lot of elk or if elk numbers are good it’s thick country so hard to find a legal bull. In any case you just have to get in the woods and look for elk and elk sign.

I’ve hunted the late muzzy season twice and it took two years of hunting to understand the elk in that area and where to find them. The next time I hunt it I’ll finally be ready...point is, you need time in the woods, boots on the ground and persistence to get it done in the late season. Btw, I’ve hunted unit 503 for late muzzy, and it ain’t easy, very little public ground with elk.
