Focus Points !!
« on: March 20, 2009, 09:24:40 AM »
Here are a couple pictures where my focus points are off just enough to screw up a nice picture, I caught this guy crossing my driveway !!

I thought they were pretty OK when I took them cause I was standing on my head to take them so I was quite uncomfortable crouching so low and I guess that what I mean to say is that when your taking photos try to be as normally comfortable as you can or some things in your procedure could be overlooked !!!

Just an observation !!!

Is that a focus point problem or a depth of field problem? I was having a similar issue taking a macro pic on a flower.  Only the stamen of the nearest bloom was in focus despite being at f/5.6 which I thought meant I'd have a deeper DOF.  Maybe with macro closeups there new rules to consider?

I took the pics below at f/5.6 - 300m - 1/500 - iso 800

Pretty cool though, almost looks 3d

It's both a focus problem and depth of field problem.  Many macro shooters shoot at high ISO because at macro distances depth of field is shallow.  Macro shooters shoot at f16 or higher all the time.
With those salamanders, the focus needs to be on the eye.  If you find your pointing at the eye but the camera won't focus where you are pointing it, you may have a back or front focus issue with the lens...

Just stop down a little and you will get more depth of field and focus will be more forgiving.
