Hahaha! Screw the .270 Win, the 30-06 and the Ford 6-Leakers!

There’s plenty to play with firearms wise. To each their own. I stay outside of the box. This cracker gave up vanilla 25 plus years ago. You can tell by the posts, who’s making the effort and dropping the cash. You can also tell who’s not doing jack and dragging  their crap filled diaper through the thread.

Maybe a simple '06 or a .270? Take it back to old school! I remember a few years back when my friend Wayne Van Zwoll hunted everything that year with a Marlin 336 30-30! 😉
Make a statement Yorke👍

I used a 30-30 Contender one year, does that count? :chuckle:

I have a strict no 30-06, 308, 270 Win, 223 or anything Creedmoor policy in my house. If I spent real money building a 30-06 I'd have to commit myself to a mental institution!
Copy that. But don't you tire, as many have, of trying to build something that offers not so much than has already been built and designed? Many, and some in here also, spend so much time and $$'s to try and design what, basically, what has all ready been done, designed, proven, built, and marketed? I've seen many from 22-as big as you can go..many cartridges, from 6×45 to fancy names as Thor, Sage, and so forth. But offer less then is already out there under names such as Arnold, Lazzeroni etc..yes, you do have something unique in the Boxmonkey, but many ride the laurels of those before them with nothing but a twerk or 2 to shoulder or wall configuration..hence, my comment to try something more common and push it to the nth degree in accuracy. That would at least be less boring is all..
Love what you do with the hand cannons though! Makes Swiggett, Mileck, and the rest proud as you definitely pick up where they left off👍👍

I suppose he could also eat Cheerios every morning. Maybe count out the same number of O's, too!
This place would be pretty lame if we had to read long, drawn out threads about a 30-06.  :)

I was being a little sarcastic. No hurt feelings here. I hunt with a 30-06 and a .243, so I enjoy reading about the wacky stuff. I also drink Miller High-Life, but I like when the guy across the fire pit is drinking whiskey and throwing cans of bug spray in the fire.

That's awesome :chuckle:

So I got out today to test fire the donor rifle, just because I have 300 RUM brass and dies sitting around. Now I'm reluctant to chop it up! :bash: I loaded up 6 rounds with 150gr SST's over a case full of IMR 7828 to get the scope on paper at 100 and then 6 rounds with the 181gr Hammer Hunters over a very similar charge of IMR 7828. I fired 3 of the 150s and was on paper at 100 yards so I shot 3 of the 181gr Hammer Hunter loads to see how they'd do.

At first glance that isn't that impressive, it's just a touch under 1" at 100 yards. Now consider that this was a completely random charge, with a bullet seated .270" off the lands so that it would fit in the internal mag. The reason the original owner sold the rifle was because he couldn't get it to shoot better than 1.5" with  any of the loads he tried. Considering that the scoped rifle weighs 8lb 2oz with a VX3 4.5-14x40 mounted on there I think a 1" group is pretty good for a light weight 300 RUM.

Now here's the kicker, this is my shooting "bench".

I usually shoot and zero my hunting guns sitting off of these shooting sticks. It's always been a more realistic way for me to gauge the field accuracy of my guns. Groups are always a little bigger than shooting off of a bench but I can still do pretty well out to around 500 yards off this setup.

So right after I fired that group, a bear came running down the old ditched off spur road that I was on. If I would have had the rifled zeroed I could have smoked that bear at 127 yards by just swinging the gun 30º to the left. I did grab the last three loads of the 181gr Hammers and take off after the bear while frantically spinning the turret down 10 MOA and right 3 MOA, but he took off into the timber. :chuckle:

So now the decision is whether or not to butcher a rifle that actually shows some real potential, or just sell off the barreled action and move on to the next project.

Ever thought of a .243 fatmac?

Don't crush my dream this early......

This just means that you'll end up with a switch barrel. You can keep the 300 RUM barrel, then have a second barrel in 7mm RUM.

It's sort of a "collect them all" thing. I had a Jim Borden built switch barrel with 270 RUM, 7 RUM and 338 Edge barrels that I'd swap back and forth while out shooting. It was a ton of fun!

We did up some 181s and the 300 ultra....I wana say we were in 3350 range and no pressure...never finished up with it  :bash:
I might try and get out tomorrow and chronograph these. I imagine they're only around 3200 fps. Now I'm tempted to take this gun out for late buck.

I ran out today to try and find the bear that I saw yesterday but no luck. I did send 3 shots over the Magneto to get a velocity and I ended up at 3155 fps. The interesting part is that this velocity tracks dead on with the Quickload predicted velocity for a friction coated 180gr Accubond. We're talking a predicted velocity of 3156 fps compared to the actual average of 3155 fps!

It looks like Dan-o is going to end up with a 300 RUM. :chuckle:

Well the poles are closed and the people have spoken. Let's take a moment to see what we've learned.

- Kentrek needs more friends on HuntWa  :chuckle:
- Apparently the 25 RUM is a terrible idea (unless there's some form of voter suppression going on here! :tinfoil:)
- The 25 Nosler isn't as bad an idea as the 25 RUM, but it's still dumb
- Only 4 of you are awesome enough to appreciate the glory of the 270 RUM.
- 7 of you had ideas that were even worse than mine. :chuckle:
- 20% think that a dangerous game cartridge is necessary to hunt in WA (I don't disagree )
- Dan-o has been bribing voters in an effort to change the outcome.

We also learned that Biggerhammer can't go more than a few weeks without getting banned (see you in May BH!) and once again has fallen victim to his one curse of telling it like it is. Anyone looking for an interesting read should use the search function to look up "Biggerhammer is a dirty rotten...". Maybe Jay.sharkbait should weigh in on this.......

Dude,
If I can't afford a custom rifle, I sure can't afford to bribe people.

There was no dark money moving here.

The people have spoken.
