Benge Youth Doe tags
« on: October 29, 2018, 09:45:35 AM »
I have two boys who both drew the Benge youth doe tag.  We are heading out this weekend to catch the last few days of the hunt.  I know the BLM has the old ranch and that's where we will probably be focusing our attention...but does anyone have any tips/ideas on how to make this a successful hunt for the boys?  They're both teenagers and are good out to 200+ yards with their two rifles.  With soccer and school activities, the season kind of got away from us so I'm hoping to get them on some does this weekend.  Thanks.

I'll be down there again with my 8 year old daughter.  We went out this last Saturday and had a fun day.  She passed on one doe who had twin tag alongs (proud dad moment) and had another old bag that wouldnt sit still long enough for Addison to get her shot off.  Got pretty wet in the morning so did a lot of just looking around.  Struck out on gaining any private access so itll likely be back to the BLM dirt for us as well.  Lot of pheasant hunters on the BLM last Saturday.   Good luck to you and your boys

thank you sir.  That's one of multiple pieces I have marked.  Finding deer isn't too big an issue.  For us its finding the right doe and then getting that 200 yard or less broadside.

200 yards...Karl, I'm guessing your daughter would put my boys to shame.  I have a son that is pretty good out to 150, but then the wheels fall off.  My other son is about as consistent as a fart in the wind.

:chuckle:  she is a very good shot.  Her big issue right now is she tends to "over aim".  Takes her a hot minute to squeeze through her shot.  It cost us a couple deer last weekend.  I'd rather that than just jerking dirty like I did as a young kid though :chuckle:

I've had the privilege of mentoring 7 youth hunters over the last decade and all my girls were better shots than the boys early on.  It's like they listen to instructions or something :chuckle:

Yeah..."listen" is a foreign word to a teenage boy who already knows everything there is to know about everything.  I would agree though.  My daughter is a much better shot than my boys, but she's not into hunting.  She'll go to the range and burn through some brass, but has zero interest in the hunt.

Went two for two yesterday.  It was an adventure, but thanks to some help on the board here, my boys both got their deer.

no tag notched for addison.  Probably my fault for too many conservation related conversations in my house but she has decided she doesnt want to shoot a doe with fawns ( a breeder as she calls them :chuckle:).  We had 6 different stalks this weekend and all put us inside gun range but all had fawns.  The one old bag we found we got to 200 yards but the wind was ripping and she couldn't steady up enough to be comfortable shooting.  All in all we had a great weekend and it was a completely positive weekend  so I'll take that as a win at 8 years old.  Huge thanks to elkburger for the info.  Those whitetails lived a blessed life :chuckle:

Great job guys.

My daughter is 15 and is very similar to what you have mentioned.  No shooting deer with fawns, very steady and conservative in shots, etc.  I have to constantly remind myself it is about her making a good shot she is comfortable, not bagging a deer.  We pass tons of opportunities, but that is part of learning.  I certainly can remember shots I should have passed on, so the learning goes both ways.

Congrats to all the young hunters. Whether you notch a tag or not, at least they got after it.

My son takes forever  :bash:  to get eveything perfect. Can't completely disagree as he does hit the deer. This year we spent 3 hours watching does, waiting for the big one to not have fawns or to offer the perfect shot angle. It was nerve racking, but again he made a great double lung shot at 125yds.  We got 39lbs of meat from her

Spot on!  It's all about their experience, not dads :chuckle:.  I cant wait for my son to come of age.  I don't think he will have much issue shooting anything :chuckle:
