Be careful Spike hunters

Had this guy on camera over the summer...I'm hoping he doesn't get a hunter in hot water.  Make sure to check and check again.

Looks like his forks are below the ears in that angle...
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!

Are any of the forks more than four inches above the skull? It not it is a legal spike.

Good reminder to be careful.

That's the best pic I had of him...it's hard to tell.  4" from the skull isn't very much and it's a little too close for me to risk it.

thats WAY TO CLOSE to make a call in the field and i'f let him pass if i wasn't 110% sure

The elk's left antler looks pretty darn far from the skull.  There is no way I would shoot that thing.

he's legal.  Game Warden wouldn't give you a problem at all.  we shot a spike like that a few years back and the game warden checked it with no problems.  He was shocked to see the lower horns and took a picture to show his fellow wardens.

I'd be comfortable shooting that spike - the eyeguards appear to originate within 4" of the hairline.

The law read as such:

Spike Bull Restrictions: Elk taken in these
game management units (GMUs) must
have at least one antler with no branches
originating more than four (4) inches above
where the antler attaches to the skull An
animal with a spike on one side (1x2) is
legal in spike only units An animal with
more than one antler point more than four
inches above where the antler attaches to
the skull on both sides (2x2) is illegal
If you aint hunting, you aint livin'

I would call that legal but what a great reminder to double check.

Here's a zoom on what I'm seeing.  You guys think that's within 4"?  Sure seems close to me.

I put a small yellow line as an indicator.

I'm not sure I need to bag an elk bad enough to risk getting charged with shooting an illegal bull.  I'd pass.

Where your yellow line is in not exactly antler, that is the covered in hair and I would call that the skull.

If a guy can shoot bullwinkle in a spike only area I know I could get cleared for shooting this bull.  :chuckle:
