First hunt of the 2018 season
« on: October 31, 2018, 02:22:43 PM »
Went to a spot that a friend showed me, mostly to clear out the trail to get in there more quietly. We saw a couple of Woodies and some Mallards in there on Sunday, but did not have any guns or dog along.
,
Amber and I snuck in this morning.  We parked before daylight, but then I thought maybe I should make sure my plug is in the gun. This is my old Wingmaster 870 (1963 vintage) full choke that I bought from my dad in 1977. Sure enough, no plug....  I spent about a half hour getting one to fit using a stiff blackberry stalk. We then snuck in to the little slough. Low and behold, there were a handful of Mallards quacking and murmuring in there. At about 35 yards, a stick snapped under the grass at my feet and they took off.

I dropped one, a second, and then a straggler flew past to get out of Dodge and managed to get her with my third shot. Amber remembered what to do and waited for me to send her off. She grabbed the farthest one first, passed the second one, but then about halfway to me she turned and traded the first for the second and brought it to hand.  She then fetched the other two when I sent her to them.  So, one little glitch in the retrieves, but not bad otherwise.

We sat for about an hour but saw no other birds flying besides high-flying geese. I did manage to chip a chunk of tooth off after biting on a small piece of gravel that was stuck to the energy bar in my coat pocket.   :(

Good girl, Amber!
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.
