Best Raingear?

Probably this topic's been discussed before, but new products come out quite often and I'm wondering what worked best in your experience so far. Whether a waterproof set of thin jacket & pants that you put on top of your clothes only when it rains or regular Stika/Kuiu/First Lite type stuff? Some say "waterproof" but don't really keep you dry after several hours. What's best in your experience in terms of being actually waterproof, tough and not too overpriced?

I spent two days on the wet side hunting blacktails in the rain.  Wore KUIU Yukon rain gear.  Not a drop of water got into my clothing.  Relatively light weight, awesome design, even the zip pockets are water proof.  I am glad I shelled out the big bucks for this stuff because it is very good quality, and works.

X2 for kuiu Yukon. It runs a little warm because it doesnt breath at all but you will stay dry.

I use gamehide

it gets heavy, but keeps me dry as long as I don't sweat.   Not good for hunting where you're exerting yourself, but for still hunting down a road for a mile or 2 it's doable.  I have a set that lives in my ATV bag.  I think hunting on the wetside for blacktail or bear it would be fine.   Not so good for Elk hunting the east side 

I would like to upgrade to that high dollar stuff

it gets heavy, but keeps me dry as long as I don't sweat.   Not good for hunting where you're exerting yourself, but for still hunting down a road for a mile or 2 it's doable.  I have a set that lives in my ATV bag.  I think hunting on the wetside for blacktail or bear it would be fine.   Not so good for Elk hunting the east side

Staying warm is the most important objective, which is why wool is popular: even when wet is tends to retain heat well.

To stay dry you need to repel exterior moisture (rain) and allow internal moisture (perspiration) to escape. Rubber and plastic are impermeable materials that will keep external moisture out, but also trap perspiration the will cause you to get wet if you move around at all.

Waterproof/breathable membranes like Gore-Tex are designed to both repel external moisture, and allow internal moisture to escape thus keeping you warm and dry. 

Another criteria is durability. If you're clawing through dense brush a waterproof membrane is more likely to get punctured and will no longer repel moisture completely.

What is best depends on the type of hunting you will do and your budget.  Surplus wool pants and jackets are probably the least expensive option. A long-term investment in quality waterproof/breathable gear is often the best alternative if it fits your budget.

I run First Lite Stormtight (pre Seak) jacket and Kuiu Yukon or Chugach's for pants. Very happy with them.
My partner runs straight Stormtight and is equally pleased.
Edit: Missed the "over priced" comment, this doesn't qualify. But worth the money to me?

I have Kuiu Yukon pants and Chugach jacket. Fully sold and very pleased with the setup. The pants are super durable and kept me dry wading through soaking wet brush day after day, and the jacket is light enough and has pit zips, so cooling down during exertion is doable. 3 seasons in, no leaks, no issues.

seriously though, I still use it.  I didn't say that's all I use.  For budget rain gear I think it's not that bad.

I have been using Sitka Downpour for quite a while and have been very happy with the set.
 
All of the top brands are pretty good..... but your going to pay for it.
