6.5 Grendel upper
« on: November 01, 2018, 07:03:28 PM »
Hello everyone, looking to get a complete 6.5 Grendel upper. Any suggestions. Im thinking 16 " or 18" as it will be for thicker brush hunting next year. I have checked out Aero precision, and a couple other but most sites are sold out of that length barrel. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks Jason

Look up radical firearms. They make a mid priced 6.5 upper that’s pretty solid.

I vote for a 20", still plenty short and seems to be magic for getting good results from the 123grn.

I just got the PSA 20" in 6.5 grendel and it's been good to me so far.

Precision Firearms makes a very good 6.5 Grendel. The only Grendel I've ever shot was theirs, so admittedly my experience is narrow, but I was very impressed with the accuracy of their rifle - very impressed.

My wife and oldest daughter have their own grendels they hunt with.
Always wanted to build one out of a Howa mini action, just to see what I could get out of it.

I built a Grendel for one of my brothers awhile back. He’s been hunting with it for six years or so. He has killed Elk out to 411 yards and has taken Mule deer out to 496 yards. I have another friend that just took a Fallow deer with a 16” Grendel and Hornady Black ammo (123 ELD-M). My brothers rifle is also a 16” carbine. Both barrels AR M4 contours.

The carbine I built my brother.

Friends Fallow.

That is a sweet set up!! I look foward to getting rolling on a build!

Awesome Stuff BH!
Depending on the configuration, a 123grn still has about 1k ft lbs at 300-400yds.

My brother shoots my handloaded 120gr Ballistic Tips. Which perform well at Grendel velocities. Not to over look the Hornady factory 123gr SST loads. That bullet is a killer in the Grendel chambering. The factory 120gr Hornady SST loads are also a killer in the 6.8 SPC chambering.

That Grendel pictured above is spooky accurate with Hornady “Black” 123gr ELD-M. This was the first 5 shot group I shot with it at 100 yards when the Hornady “Black” first came out. Of course the 5th round was out.

What happens to Yotes that chew on yard hose. Breaks them of the habit real quick. Factory Hornady 123gr ELD-M.

I agree with hammer the SST load is very hard to beat for a factory loading and very lethal.

Biggerhammer  what does that 16” 6.5 weight?

Don’t get stuck on the “6.5 Grendel” chambering in itself. There also is the .264 LBC, their both one in the same they just have a slightly different throat Spec. That’s just a technicality. Ammo is completely interchangeable. I have shot thousands of factory Hornady 6.5 Grendel ammo through BlackHole 1-8 twist .264 LBC Barrels. I’ve also shot allot of Precision Firearms .264 LBC ammo through 6.5 Grendel barrels.

The .264 LBC chambering is extremely accurate.

16” Rifle length gas .264 LBC. “Hammer Flare Contour”.

6x45 (Top)
.264 LBC (Bottom)

If you were going to hunt deer, varmints and punch paper at distance. Hands down I would go with a .243 LBC/ Grendel any day. A 95gr bullet at 3000fps out of a 22 inch barrel is a killer and flat!

.243 LBC

wow !! That is very accurate. I’m planning on using the Grendel for blacktail deer, shots from 50 to 250 yards would probably be the max. Should work out nicely!! Those rifles are Sweet!!

Well, I bought a PSA 20' upper, should be here at the end of the week. I get a couple different ammo types and see how it does! Any ammo suggestions?

Seems like Reloading might be the way to go , not finding a lot of options locally for ammo.

Factory 123 sst shoot good in both of mine. The bulk 123 bthp shoot good also. Sportsmans has them for a good deal and once you shoot em up, your barrel should be broke in and you can reload them.
