Salmon Poisoning is REAL
« on: November 04, 2018, 08:13:13 PM »
Many of you may know about Salmon Poisoning Disease (SPD) but it is REAL and nasty.
My griff just spent the day in the ER after the symptoms hit him hard. 7 days from a pit stop at vantage after a bird hunt last weekend and where he found and chewed on a nasty rotten salmon left at the boat launch.

https://www.seattledogspot.com/dog-salmon-poisoning-disease/

Just putting this out there to raise awareness, I knew nothing about it and it was/is scary and was not cheap.

I hope my pup heals up, and that others don’t have to learn the hard way.

Sorry to hear, hoping for the best!  Also remember, old rotten grass clippings are very deadly as well, lost my boy to that about a year ago.

I guess the article answers my question.   I’ve always heard this, but then have seen documentaries and shows about eskimos feeding their dogs salmon.    Endemic to Washington.   Yet I’m not sure about ocean going.... 🤔

Sorry about your dog.

Thanks for the link!

The wife and i were just talking about our dog eating rotten fish carcasses the other day. He eats ANYTHING. My neighbor had told me not to let him eat salmon, my wife says, "We watch those Alaska shows and they feed salmon to the sled dogs all the time, it should be alright".

Maybe in Alaska its alright, but per the link above its not good in Ca., Or. or Wa.

Thanks for the link, I always wondered myself about what the mechanism is.  Looks like raw is bad and I never thought about the lab sneaking a bite at a boat ramp or even the chum creek at the edge of our property.

Never had a dog get into salmon before but have seen folks use peroxide to induce vomiting if the dog has eaten it very recently. Although I haven't actually heard this from a vet so I don't know if it should be done.

I have been told to do this by a vet in the past, not for salmon poisoning but for other not so great stuff he decided to eat. Two tips, 1: do it outside, results are very quick. 2: it don't take much peroxide to get the ball rolling.

The salmon does not make the dogs sick. It is larvae from a snail that eats the rotting salmon that poisons the dogs. The snail lives in rivers in Washington, Oregon and California. Raw salmon straight out of salt water is not a problem. Rotting salmon in the river is very bad. I keep my dogs away from rivers with salmon until I know all the chum have been washed out. That is usually March.

Looks like the pup is going to make a recovery. We had him drinking Pedialite light night, and have been getting him to take his pills. Being a PNW native and outdoorsman and dog owner; I am amazed that I have never heard of this before. I have been talking to my friends about this lately too and may of them had no idea. I will be trying my best to get hte word out.

I hope the people who hard-headedly disagreed with this linked thread  read about the OP's problems.
