Whitetail Raffle Tag
« on: November 08, 2018, 08:11:16 AM »
Good morning everyone! Its that time of year again when you actually look forward to waking up to cold frosty weather that only means one thing...late season is here! Well as some of you might know, my hunting partner drew a moose tag and we managed to shoot a whopper of a bull with his bow pretty early on in the season. It couldn't of worked out better as he has also drawn the whitetail raffle tag which I believe is good for any whitetail unit until December 31. We are not very familiar with many of the units up in the NE but there has to be some dandy bucks somewhere. If anyone is willing to possibly share the location of a big buck it would be MUCH appreciated. We are not the kind of people to step on anyones toes when it comes to hunting spots as we have our own. We are simply looking to be in and out on hunting one particular buck and most likely it will be with archery equipment. It might be a long shot but we had many cams out through the summer and wound up with some good bucks but not any he wanted to use the tag on. We will be up there hunting starting next Thursday so if anyone has some info they would be willing to share it would be appreciated.

Thanks and good luck to everyone out there this year and BE SAFE!
Jason

I have some cameras out and will maybe set a few more this weekend. If anything worthy happens to pop up I will let you know

That would be fantastic, thank you!!

We are absolutely serious about others spots too like I previously said. We have our own and we know how it is and all we are looking for is a big buck to hunt and thats it.

Good luck to you guys! Thank the probably going to run into with this request is it most Whitetail areas are open for late-season and if somebody has a big buck then they are probably hunting him. Can't her throw a dart at the board though right

Yes you are spot on with your comment and i understand completely. I was more or less thinking maybe there is some units that don't have a late season or even after the season if there was a good buck that didn't get killed we might be able to hunt. There is also seeing one crossing a road or even hearing about some big crazy buck somewhere that we could look into.

I am definitely not looking for a deer someone is hunting, I would never do that. But yes I know I am pretty much throwing a dart out there haha. Doesn't hurt to try. We have a bunch of cams out and on some pretty good bucks so we are hoping to not have to hunt someone else's spot but nothing is ever a give me with hunting. I also know I do not have any credibility on this sight as well as my posts are extremely low. I am not much of a computer guy so I am usually not messing around or spending much time on one.

All info is good info at any rate though so thanks.

If you're going to the NE Corner, you could call Buck Canyon Lodge or Bearpaw.  Both know the corner quite well.

I know I would.

I would be hunting the blues or unit 101 with that tag if you don’t have much experience in the NE corner.

Update as I am now back from our whitetail hunt. My buddy with the raffle tag passed on a couple 140 bucks as we did find a couple dandies. I had an opportunity at a 140 myself which happened to be one of the bucks he passed on earlier but I was not comfortable with the shot so I passed never to see him again. On to a blacktail for me now as I will not have time to go back with my buddy for whitetails. Hopefully he will get one of the bruisers we were after. I think with the moon, weather and wolves in the immediate area it was a tough hunt. I will post some pics if he gets something but it could take a while (if) he connects.

Thanks everyone for the responses and at this point i am still willing to receive pics or info on a big buck until he fills his tag. Never know, could be bigger or crazier than what we found.

Passing on 140 bucks in WA?!

Killing a 140” this early would be a mistake. Just a nice mature buck, not a raffle buck in general
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

That is exactly right as far as a raffle tag anyhow. I myself was going to shoot it haha. We had found a couple dandy bucks I think he would have put the raffle tag and general tag on if he gets them both. One is about the 160 range and the other is 170-180 but hard to tell the mass in the night photos. Neither had showed themselves in the daylight yet. My buddy is going back so with a little snow hopefully it will help.

Passing 140” whitetails with the whitetail raffle tag makes all the sense in the world to me. There are some giant whitetails here in WA. Don’t tell anyone.

Keep holding out, its just getting good.  I had the tag last year, didnt get the biggest buck i moved on, but got a good one.  Right now i just got home to take a day off from hunting, but today almost got a dandy 7x6, and 2 days ago damn near got the big 6x6 im after, had my bow drawn on him at 30 yards but didnt get to shoot before he ran off after a doe.  Big bucks are moving daylight right now, rutting hard.  This is the buck i got with the raffle tag last year.  Missed a bigger one just a couple hours earlier, saw an even bigger one day before, but couldnt get in range.

Thanks Bango for the inspiration! That is a very nice buck and yes we have some serious whitetails in this state if you know how to find them. Im glad to hear things are picking up that well right now as I didn't have much rutting action when I was hunting. Sad I can't get back up there. I know the tag holder has no problem holding out what so ever as he already has a 25" wide 170" whitetail on his wall. Im sure he wants to top it if he can. The two big ones we have at our stands is a 6x6 and 7x7. They are very neat bucks and I hope he gets at least one of them.

Yes he is hunting with his bow. If there happened to be a case where it was a once in a lifetime buck in open country that he couldn't get the job done with the bow he might use his 6.5mm Remington XP100 hand gun. I really doubt it will come to that though but you never know.

and though I have seen some world record class whitetail in this state, I cant say they have hung around long enough for me to get a photo, let alone get an arrow in, so maybe thats why I usually shoot 140-150 whities.

I hear ya, I would be perfectly fine taking 140-150 bucks myself. Yeah we do have some world record class bucks as you said and I'm hoping we can find one. That buck in the photo is beautiful. He is about an inch wider than the one I almost took earlier in the week.

Update. Still no success as of yet. The tag holder went home for a few days for some rest. I know some moose moved in hard some of his spots and a bear is showing up at one rolling around in the alfalfa haha. Guess he is not ready for the sleep yet. One of the big bucks left but one is still around but to date has not shown himself in the daylight. We hunted this buck last year and I think he only showed himself one time in the daylight the whole time we hunted him. Hopefully some things change for him when he goes back up.

I ate the tag, missed a good one, rattled in a small one, saw some shooters on land I couldn’t hunt and saw a bunch of smaller bucks that I didn’t want to shoot.  Funtime though for sure.

Outcome was kind of a bummer as there was some issues and was not able to get back over to finish the hunt so he ate the tag. Was hoping for a better response but sometimes hunting needs to be put on the back burner.

Does anybody know what day raffle tickets go on sale?  I remember last year it was pretty early in the year when i asked at the store, and they were available.  Cant find the date in regs though.  Id like to get in right off the bat this year.

It is a bummer but he is not out a bunch of money though thankfully as he only bought one raffle ticket and got drawn. So thats good at least. I don't remember when the raffle tickets go on sale but it didn't really seem like it was all that early to me. Would of been pretty neat though to get a really big whitetail this year along with the big moose he got. We actually took a couple days during moose opener to hunt a 150'' buck that kept showing up mid day but never got a chance at him.
