I love my Stoeger 3020 (20 guage). I got it brand new for $300 last year. Weighs less than 6 pounds and has been great carrying it around upland hunting.

Never had a problem with my Rem. 1187, although my buddy's. Benelli Super Black Eagle is sweet. I'd steal it from him but he's my friend and I don't want to make him a criminal.

$300 for a good semi might be a bit tough but they are out there. Remington or Mossbergs might be your best bet and yeah check pawn shops in the area.

All the guns listed are good. Before you rush out to find one check the feel and fit, you noted that pump guns "just don't fit or feel right" and I would concur with that. I don't shoot Remington 1100/11-87's because the wrist area doesn't fit me correctly. After 50 or so rounds my hand and wrist are numb and painful (that's me).
Another auto to look for is a Baikal/Rem Spartan, made in Russia not pretty but very functional. Note parts are available from EAA Corp in Florida. I have one that I use on the salt water, after 12 years of hard usage only one part broke. I was able to fix that issues with a wine bottle cork cut in half.      :chuckle:

Cabelas has the Stoeger M3000 on holiday sale for $399.97 after rebate.  It's more than your budget but if you want a new gun you will have a hard time beating that.  If you need to stick to $300, you will need to look in the used market.

Save a bit more to bolster your budget and get something like a used Franchi or used Winchester SX2/SX3, or even a used Beretta Xtrema or A400 if you're lucky.

Don’t go cheap on a semi auto you’ll regret it. Handle a ton of pumps until you find the right one
