Staying warm in the late season
« on: November 08, 2018, 02:55:33 PM »
I’ll be solo tent camping during the late season.  Just good old fashion Colman tent that’s been good to me but I hate getting up and ready when it’s 25 out.  How does everyone stay warm that doesn’t have a stove or RV.  I think I’m gonna drag my big generator up and run an electric heater.  I do have a small mr heater but that doesn’t do much.  I wish I had a bit bigger one but that’s not in the budget this year.

Propane space heater. one small propane canister will run a space heater for around 5 hours.

buddy heater with 5 gallon propane tank will last you most the week. Just crank it up for a few minutes to warm tent up, on low while you sleep then crank back up while getting dressed. It can cause some condensation and doesn't work great to dry gear but its better than the alternative.

One of my favorite tricks is to put a hot water bottle in my bed.
Use the same water all week. After dinner boil water, fill bottle, wrap in shirt or towel, place foot of bag.
Warm all night for about $12.00 bucks.

I've done the same with rocks...somthing about the size of a grapefruit wrapped in a tshirt

You need good insulation below you.  Wear a stocking hat to bed, most body heat is lost through your noggin.  Hand warmers or all of the previously mentioned methods can keep you toasty in your bag.  Wake up, turn heater on, crawl back in the sack for a few minutes, get up and get dressed in warmth.  It works!

If it were me going with the coleman, I'd go with a mr. heater and maybe a tarp over the tent to help keep the wind out.

There will be condensation, and I wouldn't run it all night(although many have - a personal thing for me, isn't worth even a little risk)... I'd run it when I was in camp, turn it off to sleep. Turn it on in the morning 5 minutes before getting out of the sleeping bag.

The water bottle trick is good too. I hope you have a good sleeping bag regardless.

I've tent camped for quite awhile now and what I've found is buy a  -10 sleeping bag, cost extra but it's worth it. This year it got down to 18 at hunting camp and I was sweating in bag. Put your clothes u want to wear in a.m,  In your fart sack with u they will b nice and toasty when u wake up in a.m. best of luck during late season

A tent that is equipped with a rain fly that will go almost to the ground will hold enough heat in for a cold morning with even the small buddy heaters. If you have to you can drape a big tarp over it but the higher up the rain fly or tarp is, the less heat it will hold. Also smaller tents work well to get heat fast. I use to carpet my tent and put a fleece blanket on my cot to lay on for extra insulation. You can also get a fleece sleeping bag liner as well but they are a bit warm for me.
