Got my Elk cape back, ITS HUGE!!! 38+ at the ears.
« on: March 21, 2009, 09:44:17 AM »
I could not believe how Huge my Bull cape was once I got it back from the Tannery. It is absolutely the biggest cape I have seen. 38 + at the ears un-streatched, will go 40 streatched!! Most big elk capes will be 32 - 34 with a few (not many) to 36 streatched. The Head is HUGE too. I cant wait to build a form to fit the hogger bull of mine. Here is a couple pics !!

The first picture is a nice bull cape @ 32 inches, it goes on a 344 bull I'll be mounting up soon.

2nd picture is my cape.

I know, I can tell by the size of your hands.  I've seen one other bull that was like that.  He was the big herd bull in yellowstone for years.  Huge animal.  He was a little more blonde in the face, or unicolor though

Did you actually find one that fits or are you going to have to add a bunch to it.

It is going to need some mods for sure. The head and neck mainly. My bull had a 13 1/4 eye to nose and you know the neck. Well the form is a 12 3/4 by 34. Shouldnt bee too bad a project though. It will be for competition, I hope to take it and a few others to the show in Kalamath Falls Oregon in June!

The bold words above, is that average ear tip to ear tip. Because if it is then maybe bone can use his spread program on the elk pic I sent him.

No. its the width of the neck right below the ears, taxi measurements for form fitment.

Jon, the Bou is going to take a bit, I had them put it through the stop rot solution to help insure it doesnt slip. I didnt like how they took care of your cape up there. They turned the lips and eyeys but left all the meat on and salted over top of everything. Not good for salting, salt has to penetrate clear through the meat to get to the hide so I took precautions and had them do this. It costs me more $ but I would rather have a good cape to work with. It is just precaution. They will put all the stop rot capes in a big vat since it is a very expensive material they use so it may be a bit before they get to it.
