S.E. Wa. Buck down
« on: November 17, 2018, 07:21:47 AM »
Second day hunting, buck down. My first whitetail buck. Not a monster but I'm pretty happy. Sure can't find a legal mule deer to shoot so a whitetail will have to do!

And here's one that shows the background. As you can see, this doesn't look like whitetail country. We were looking for mule deer. In fact my brother went up over the ridge to see if there are any mule deer on the other side. Hope I hear a shot soon!

 Nice! Any deer down is a good day.  Seems you're in the opposite boat I was in.  All I could find was mulies and not a single whitie.

We've seen lots of mule deer, and very few whitetails. Just can't find a legal mule deer. Plenty of does and two points. But the whitetails are certainly scarce.

Anyone ever seen a deer with the knees all scarred up? Three of the four knees have scar tissue and you can see that the hair has grown back. But one of the rear knees is all torn up, recently it appears. Looks like this guy spends a lot of time down on his knees crawling, probably because there's so little cover here. I'm guessing anyway. Does that sound right?

Here's the worst rear knee. (Actually, technically it's probably not a knee but not sure what else to call it)

Same as your heel, hock for livestock folks.  Sure looks like road rash, maybe an infection from all of those yellowstar spines.

Nice buck! He will taste better than any mule deer. Maybe the coyotes have been nipping at his heels.

Good one Bobcat!  Congrats.
The wound looks similar to hot spots like my dogs get occasionally in summer, only worse.  Nasty looking stuff there.

WOW, I've seen a lot of dead deer, never seen anything quite like that wound on his hind leg?

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I'm still thinking the scarred up legs are from him getting down to hide from people and vehicles driving by, as he was living near a major highway, and a gravel county road. Also a seriously high infestation of coyotes in the area. It's unbelievable how many we saw and heard, and coyote crap everywhere you look. I'm hoping to go back in a few months to do some coyote hunting. I don't know how any fawns are surviving with that many coyotes around.

Here's a picture of one of the front knees. You can see it's been scarred up and healed over, and the hair has grown back. Wish I would've gotten some better pictures. Another thought is it could have happened from going under fences. We found one spot where deer had regularly going under a barb wire fence.
