Need a little help
« on: November 18, 2018, 05:42:56 PM »
My fellow hunters, my name is William Nelson. I am a beyond avid bow hunter from Erie, Colorado. I have had the good fortune of traveling the world with a bow in hand, I actually use my bow as the means to see and experience as much as I possibly can. I Look forward to sharing some of my experiences!

I have joined your forum because I need a little help. Back in August, I arrowed a Pope and Young (P&Y) Sitka black-tailed deer in Alaska-one of the toughest hunts I have ever taken. Then in September, I arrowed a P&Y Mule deer in Colorado. Finally, a week ago, I arrowed a P&Y white-tailed deer in South Dakota.

I think it would be an amazing feat if I could, with the help of God and friends, successfully bow hunt a Columbia Black-tailed deer and Coues deer...giving me all five North American deer species in a single season. I may or may not accomplishes this goal, but it would still be awesome to try.

I have friends willing to help me with the Coues deer in Arizona. Their season starts  January 1st.

My problem, I have zero contacts in Washington State and haven't a clue where to go or where to begin. Any advice will be welcome. I am even willing to trade hunts in Colorado, Wyoming, Australia, Africa, Europe, etc. I am well connected internationally. To date, I have arrowed over 150 different species of big game around the world with my bow-trading hunts wherever possible.

I look forward to getting to know you all.

Thank you for your consideration,
Will

WOW, what a season and first post

Sorry but I don't have any insight in your quest, but I do wish you best of luck on hunting the elusive Black tail Deer, but remember, they are not called Ghost Of the Woods for nothing......  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

 Good Luck :hello:

Thank you Gasman.

For me, the adventure has always been the trophy, and I fully understand why they call it hunting versus getting. It will forever haunt me if I do not try...

I may need to modify the goal to all five within a year. I realize the season is almost over.

My 2018 season started in April while I was guiding in Africa. I managed to arrow 6 animals in between hunts. While guiding, I helped 8 hunters bag 57 trophies-including 2 monster East Cape kudu bulls (a 53 incher and a 54 incher). In August, I helped a terminal Cancer patient arrow a very respectable Colorado antelope buck-what a challenge. He was very frail, but we got-r-done. In September, I helped hunters with their archery elk and deer. I put an elk in the freezer for myself in October. Needless to say, my 2018 has been blessed.

Very cool. I stopped hunting all my productive blacktail spots when they started charging access fees so I can't point you in any good directions but want to wish you good luck!

Is your goal for a pope and young deer or just any blacktail buck?

I'd be more than happy to welcome you to hunt.  The caveat is, there are absolutely no P&Y bucks around where I hunt.  You'd be looking at forks, but they are free-ranging Blacktails. This one is bigger than most.   ;)

I would be happy with any legal deer. In my opinion, if the does need to be managed, then manage them...the reason behind the "any deer" tag. Honestly, I married a city girl 20 years ago. She said to me a few years back, " I hope the heck I die before you." I asked her why she would wish such a thing on herself. She told me, "Because I do not want to deal with all your SH#T when you're gone." She will not let me put heads up in the house. So respectfully, I will leave the horns, if I must, for the guys willing to do something with them. Most of my horns/antlers are turned into amazing craved knife handles-which are given away to near and dear people.

Idaho guy,

I have three unique hunting goals: 1) achieve SCI's World Hunting Award with archery equipment, 2) hunt all 27 North American big game species as Chuck Adams did it back in the early 80s, and 3) successfully hunt a respectable deer from all fifty states.

With 157 different species under the belt, I am just 6 animals away from completing goal #1. I have 18 species for goal #2 (a blacktail would be 19). I am 26 states into goal#3...Idaho is not included (hint, hint).

I am the epitome of a weekend warrior. I work a mazillion hours during the offseason so I can spend 5 weeks a year traveling and hunting. Thankfully, my wife allows me time.

I wish you good luck on your quest.  Unfortunately, I only have recommendations, which may be no help this late in the season:
1. If you want a P&Y Blacktail, I'd be looking at Northern CA, the southern half of OR, or possibly a guided hunt in British Columbia.  Though there are large bucks here and there throughout the region, the antler size in general for any given size animal seems to be larger anywhere south of Eugene, OR.    I have no idea if any of those seasons are still open for archery, or if you've already tagged bucks in these states and prefer to hunt elsewhere.
2. If the buck has to be taken in WA, then if this good weather holds out, somewhere up high and just west of Pacific Crest Trail might put you into an area where there's been a bit of genetic mixing with Muleys over the past few thousand years, producing Benchleg Bucks that have Blacktail characteristics with antlers much larger than the typical Colombian Blacktail Deer. (For P&Y, I believe you must be west of the PCT for the buck to be considered a BT.  I could be totally wrong on that) Chances are pretty good that you'll be deep in snow in the next couple weeks at these elevations.

Good luck!
