Rusting handle bolt solution?
« on: November 24, 2018, 11:41:46 AM »
This is the second year I'm playing this game.  After a three day late season hunt I return to find the bolts that hold the handle on my bow are rusting.  Just seems to happen on one side and I'm assuming that's the side with the most contact.  I can understand why it's rusting after being carried around in the rain for three days (although it was dried off and kept dry every night back at camp).  Last year I pulled the bolts out knocked the rust off and painted them.  Obviously this was not a permanent solution.

I'm guessing there is a better mouse trap that someone has figured out and I'm hoping someone would be willing to share.  I've come up with three solutions so far - #1 fill my tag in the early season so I don't need to hunt in the 40 degree pissing rain!  #2 - find replacement bolts that are anodized aluminum if possible  #3 - find a replacement grip with some type of no rusting fastener.

Any suggestions on a replacement or solution would be greatly appreciated.

I've used car wax for similar bolts on knives.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

If you use stainless bolts & nuts you had better use anti-seize nickle type.I have had stainless gall and had to carbon arc the heads off.

So I went the stainless route.  Local hardware store with large selection made the matching easy.  I touched up the heads of the bolts with a little flat black rustoleum paint since I had some and the heads were very shiny.  I'm sure the shine would cause no issues but made me feel better anyway.

pcal - you will have to pardon my lack metallurgy knowledge.  What would cause that to happen?
