Tires from Amazon?

Anybody but tires from Amazon?  They seem to have a good deal with free shipping on the BFG's I want.  Plus, Pep boys has a deal with them to install for $19.99 a tire.  Pep boys quoted right at $1450 for the same tires.  Amazon is $249 a tire plus tax and $19.99 install.  Even if I have to throw in $20 a tire for lifetime balance and rotation, seems hard to beat.  Pep boys usually gets my tire business as they have been competitive and good to work with.

let me get this straight... Pep boys quoted you $500 more but will mount your Amazon tires? they charge you $120 more for mount balance etc... and are ok with that? Kind of sounds like a no brainier especially if you have TPMS sensors

The Pep Boys quote was mounted, balanced, and out the door with lifetime rotation/ balancing.  Total price with Amazon tires looks to be a couple hundred less.

Yep I bought mine from amazon. I had Schwab mount them up for $150. Still ended up saving around $800. I rotate my own tires and schwab charges $20 to fix a flat.

I have, but Discount Tire had same price on Goodyear Duratracs when it was time to replace them.

See if discount tire will match those prices and do it.  Some things I just won't give my money to Amazon for.  Don't care if I save a few bucks.

Pretty much everyone selling tires will price match as long as we're comparing apples to apples....We will, but if it's a place like Amazon or tirerack.com we add $20.00 to each tire price to account for shipping, etc. Most places make almost no money off of tires...they just hope to get the wheels off the vehicle to inspect brakes and shocks and such. Schwab lovesssss to replace shocks and struts.

We will not install Amazon or any other mail order company tires. It's just not worth it.

I've heard of this. Straight BS. I have made people sign an invoice acknowledging their car was unsafe to drive, but you can't forbid someone from driving away in their car. Do what you have to do to CYA and let them roll.

I bought my Michelin's on amazon. saved almost $100 per tire. but I also go them mounted and balanced for free... pays to have family with the right equipment 

although... dang. My dad closed his shop. No more free alignments, tire mounting, body work, paint, windshield installation...    @woodchuck, you don't know anyone with that kind of hookup, do you?

I think we are going to see more  of this drop ship lean inventory in the pipeline. I talked to a Tire shop manager whom said he is increasingly seeing online prices being shown to him that are lower than his purchase price.  If there is no return on holding inventory Tire stores wont hold stock except for the really quick movers, which is hard with all the sizes and brands out there,and/or for the really good customers... In short this is a is an acceleration and  thinning out of the supply chain.

What does this mean for consumers...

Freebees are going away. you are now going to pay for everything. If you have a blow out and need an XYZ brand tire and size you are going to pay a premium unless you can wait. I belive we have already seen a rise in the number of small  independent used tire shops that are certified installers for drop ship companies. They will only hold used inventory and virtually no new tires. Most people have noticed the rise in used tire shops popping up everywhere. In order to survive selling your service your overhead and investment in inventory has to be low.

If you run non stock tire size you should own a full sized spare for your ride on a wheel. If you have a pre 09 non TPMS  vehicle then you can probably get away with just the tire just in case. most tire shops wont install a tire older than 7-10 years old. If its already on a wheel you can swap it out yourself.

I buy trailer tires online.  Been good tires, better then Les Sch expensive flats.  Schwabby mounts em and it saves me half with a better tire imop.

Sooooo, what's a good all terrain tire to buy for an F150?  I haul heavy loads occassionally, pull a large (for f150) travel trailer often, drive in snow at times, and drive on logging roads (including timber co crushed rock that seems to eat tires) often.  I'm not into offroading and the majority of the use will be to and from work/around town.

I put Cooper Discoverer AT3's on my 1/2 ton last year and I'm really happy with them.  I went with an LT tire and E rating.

I have been happy with the longevity and traction with the Goodyear Duratracs on an F350.  I replaced mine a bit prematurely with about 1/4" tread left, and there was a noticeable difference going over the passes with all the standing water over the last few weeks.

There is a set of Michelins for sale in the classifieds. I posted a screenshot of my price on them, indicating that it was a smoking deal. I looked them up on Amazon....they're a lot less than my cost on them on Amazon and we hardly make any money on tires. 10% over cost is about where we're at to stay competitive.

(Those tires in the classifieds are still cheaper than amazon for the record)

I was going to scrap the Coopers and go back to the tried and true 10 ply BFG AT KOs.
Discount gave me 80% credit for the Coopers, applied to the AT KOs.
Got them for half off, and they mounted the best Cooper on my spare for free.
Even though they had the lowest price on the BFGs, “Good customer service”, I will reword with my business, even if I pay a few dollars more.

Duratracs would be my vote. On my 3rd set. Have also ran the Cooper St Max and liked it but prefer the duratrac a little more in the winter.

Just came back from WY on real icy roads both in WY and on I-90. Awesome tires and much less than the BF/ko2's There the best tires I ever used foe hunting and winter driving.

After being a devoted Michelin AT buyer, I have had good experience with Cooper and now, Falken Wildpeak AT3W.  The LT tires ride better than the Michelins.  Traction on ice remains to be seen.  Discount Tire has been very good to work with.

Falken wild peak atw3's are awesome. Bought a new truck that came with toyo MT's and I'm almost looking forward to replacing them so I can get some Falkens again.

Pep Boys ended up matching Amazon's price for the tires, and then installed them formless than Amazon's agreement.  Their installation included rotation and balancing for life too.  With tax, I was out the door for $1180 for the BFG KM2 255/85-16's.  Saved approx $65 a tire.
