thoughts on the lighter bullets
« on: November 29, 2018, 12:55:15 PM »
What are some thoughts on lighter bullets for deer?I have been looking at the 6.5 creedmoor a little more lately and with the 125 grain bullet no problem for deer.very straight because its fast.Wind resistant because of speed.now if a person wanted to take this same idea and ran a 155 grain A-MAX bullet through a .300 win mag at around 3450 fps how would it do at longer ranges like 500-800 yards?
Would you run this for a youth hunter for less recoil (He got it from grandpa)?

Run the numbers, there will be a point that the lighter and faster bullet is actually slower and dropping more than a heavier more ballistic ally efficient one at extended range. Not sure where that would be comparing your 155 example to a 180 or heavier in 300 win tho.

yes  :yeah: i run the 200 eldx in mine.New to me all around,i always did heavier is better. It also has 1-10 twist. at 850 yards it would be around 1023 in energy at 1741 fps.with 15.4 moa drop.

I just ran it in my app. Compared to my 215 Berger.

215 Berger is 17.5 moa drop and 1.9 for 10 mph wind. 1895 retained energy and 1992 velocity.

155 Berger vld is 15.1 moa drop 2.6 moa for same wind. 1197 retained energy and 1865 velocity.

Lighter and faster is a good bit flatter but more affected by wind. Lower speed and energy at target also. I like heavys.  :chuckle:

There’s definitely a happy median on this. If you go too light they are effected much more by wind than heavier bullets. Also depending on the range the light bullets will shoot flatter to a distance but generally at some point on extended range shots the heavier bullet will actually have superior ballistics. I generally stay fairly heavy for those reasons and the additional energy at longer ranges.
