It will work in the fall. I called in a young one my first time trying it with a fawn in distress.

What call or calls are you most successful with? Sequence???  Non stop or taking breaks?

I have done well using a very raspy call.  I call with a lot of emotion and anguish.  I set a watch out in front of me to keep track of time.  I start off somewhat quiet and increase my volume and intensity.  I call non-stop for at least 45 minutes to an hour.  If I am hunting with someone else we trade off calling, anytime there is a slight pause the other guy starts calling.  I put the watch out front because when calling by myself it is hard work to call non-stop for that amount of time.  I will say most of my bears have come in within 25 to 30 minutes.

Out of curiosity, about what percentage of the time does calling work for you? I'm very new, so I've tried calling maybe ... 20 times? And haven't seen anything yet. Is that expected? Or am I doing something wrong, perhaps not calling long enough, or in the right places?

So when you say non stop, you don't even have like 10 second breaks or so? Literally non-stop?

Here's my 2 cents:

1.) Make sure to have signs (i.e. scat, tracks, howling, prior yote sightings)

2.) The keys for me to have success is taking my time to get in as quite as possible and avoiding tipping animals off that your around.

3.) Keep the wind in your face, keep the sun light at your back when possible and no talking, no snuffing or moving once your at your set.

20 sets without a sighting tells me your missing something from above IMO, but sometimes the dice don't roll in our favor.
Things that make life awesome: duck, spring bear, coyote hunting, tuna, salmon and steelhead fishing.

I would say I average a bear every 20 to 25 hours of calling.  The best I have done is called in 2 in the same weekend.  But I have gone some long stretches with nothing.  Normally the long stetches are becasue I am cold calling, checking out new country and not calling on fresh sign.  Most of the time if you call on really good fresh sign, you're going to call in a bear.

Pretty much non-stop, I may pause for 4 or 5 seconds to listen, might have heard something and stopped to listen, but generally I try and keep calling the whole time.  Is it more effective than pausing?  I'm not sure.  I have not seen for myself a bear coming into a call and then giving up and leaving because I stopped calling for a short time, but it is what I have heard can happen...so I call virtually non-stop.

Fall calling works as well as in the spring, if not better in my opinion.

Keep at it, good things will come. Now is my favorite time to call, provided its not too windy and rainy.
