Trip report for 336/342 @ BBQ Flats
« on: November 29, 2018, 08:22:00 AM »
We came over from the wet side on Sunday and I just wanted to get some boot time in so we dropped in to 336 before checking in the hotel in Ellensburg (avoid the Motel 6 for multiple reasons) We went in on Elk Heights Road and went straight in and hiked up to the ridge and worked back down towards the ranch. LOTS and LOTS of deer and not much, if any, elk sign. There was about 6-8 inches of new snow on the north side of the ridge. We put some significant miles in and found every game animal except elk including turkeys and two very good bucks.  If you are hunting deer late, this is your spot!! In the afternoon we worked the shelf and the ridge on the north side of Taneum road and again, dozens of deer and not much elk sign-did see a bear though. The following days were spent in 342 around Umptanum Creek and ultimately IVO of BBQ flats. The road from Umptanum Creek down to Wenas was a skating rink and very risky for those without chains. It was still frozen when we left yesterday. Took us a day and a half but we found a herd that had little to no pressure, in fact they were exactly where we left them the day before. Folks were driving right past em and not seeing them and I only saw one other hunter on foot. You miss so much in your vehicle. I never saw a herd just out in the open during the daylight hours even though i spent hours glassing every opening. We also saw animals up and off the Audobon Road that were being a little more pressured. If you are headed out in the next couple days, I can give you some more detailed information. The animals didn't look as though they were in a hurry to leave so they should still be there. We didn't connect but had an awesome time being out in the field and seeing animals with opportunities. You guys have helped me in the past and I want to do the same if anyone needs it. Good Luck till next year.

Theres a huge amount of tribal pressure in this area so the animals probably wont be standing out in the open next to the road.  Your report is very nice and detailed, but you possibly just signed all those animals death warrant.   One bad thing about the internet I guess.  News travels faster than the local bar.

As long as they're hiding out of sight away from the road they're safe. Nice report and it wasn't detailed so i don't see a problem with his post.
