Idaho Elk and Deer
« on: December 24, 2018, 12:21:41 PM »
I've never been to Idaho except driving i90.I have some time off New Years weekend and wanted to go for a drive to look at the state and see some animals.Any one got any ideas where to start I'll be leaving from Walla Walla.I understand that it's the wrong time of year to do this.Iam planning on staying in motels but will have all my camping gear with me just in case I get stuck or maybe like some place. Thanks :dunno:

Drive through Lewiston to grangeville, I’d love to hear what you think of that place/area.  And if you make it far enough, salmon Idaho as well. Drive safe!
“In common with”..... not so much!!

I don't know where you got the idea this is a bad time of year to look at animals, but you're wrong. Yes, they won't be in their typical summer habitat but their winter range is lower down, closer to more roads. Depending on what sort of country you wanted to look at you travel path could vary. Personally I'd head up through Lewiston and turn south to cut through McCall or head further east and make the turn south once you hit 93. There's a lot of animals to be seen in the flats and desert this time of year from the Arco on west along the foothills through Castle Rocks. Another good option would be cutting through the South Hills and Owyhee river country for finding some of the animals migrating down out of Nevada. For simply looking at animals, winter is a great time.

Go to grangeville and go North if you want to see whitetail go south of grangeville to Riggins and you will start seeing mule deer.  Lots of deer can be spotted on the hillsides between whitebird and Riggins right now
