Traveling Into Canada With Reloaded Ammunition

Anyone have any info on taking reloaded rifle ammunition into Canada?

I was recently told that you can only take factory loaded ammo in factory boxes across the boarder. I reload pretty much everything I shoot and I'm debating building a 338/375 Ruger for a Moose hunt I have coming up in BC in 2019. I would like to hear what your experiences were with this and if it is truly going to be an issue.

I’ve had no problem.  The only issue I had was when I had shot shells in my truck.   When they strip searched my truck, I literally had ammo I had no idea I had in there.   Ooops

Wasn't a problem for us....3 of the 4 of us had reloaded ammo.

Not sure if its a Problem in Canada But to be Safe use this Method When Ive Traveled to Africa I use Reloads  I Put them In Factory Boxes, Its Even Been Suggested by The Outfitter to Just Put them in Normal Plastic Carriers and  Use a Label Maker  Labeling the Caliber and Grain Of Bullet And  Have It Say FACTORY AMMO

Rifle ammo is ok. Whatever you do, DO NOT CROSS with any handgun ammo. If they find one she’ll, they will tear your vehicle apart looking for a pistol or ammo. I’ve never been checked on the ammo I’ve taken over, always had great experiences getting in to Canada for hunting related trips

I've never had a problem going into Canada with handloads. My first trip I asked the Canadian Customs how many rounds I could take, it was only 5,000 a bit over kill. But on the other hand I've had run in with US Customs, i.e. not knowing the Latin name of the animal in the cooler (USDA Requirement if asked) and not having a 4457 form for all my personal effects taken. Had one for my rifle but not the scope.

stop on the US side before you go to Canada, get your 4457 stamped and signed for the gun/s you have.

This is a PDF one you can do ahead of time to save a few minutes, print it out but do not sign it, you have to be in front of a customs guy to sign it and get it stamped

Jason, You should be able to get your 4457 forms stamped at the US Customs office in Vancouver. I get mine done at the office for the Port of Tacoma.

Is there a storage requirement going into Canada with a long gun?

Long story short:

Went on a bear hunt in Canada. No problem getting my reloaded ammo in. But on way back they checked my baggage and took my box of ammo out of my suitcase. I had no idea this happened until I got home and there was a notice in my suitcase stating they randomly checked my bag and removed “hazardous items out. Hazardous? You let me bring it in your socialist country in the first place!! I’m still pissed because the empty shell I shot my bear with was in there and I wanted to keep it. 🤬

woulda been TSA most likely.

If Customs took it then you'd have paperwork, but TSA can take stuff without any paper work at all.

It happened at the Winnipeg airport, on my way to Vancouver where I had to ho through customs. So it had nothing to do with our customs. The notice they left me indicated that it occurred at the Winnipeg airport. I’m still mad🤬
