Good Montana Whitetails
« on: December 08, 2018, 07:23:02 PM »
I'm thinking about getting the deer/elk combo for Montana next year. I have shot plenty of 150-165" Muleys in Montana.  I have an itch to try and get a 140" + whitetail over there. I know there is good Wt hunting in Western Montana but my preferred hunting terrain is open grassland/crp country. I have seen a few good wt bucks in Central Montana.  Just curious how many of you guys have gotten good open country wt bucks in Montana over the years. I would even consider trading hunting spot info. I believe my hunting partners and I have done above average for MD bucks in Montana.

Wa is for Whitetail’s. If there’s a place with good mule deer numbers why would you waste a muley hunt going after Whitetail’s?  :chuckle:

Just as an observation, does anyone else notice Karl is wearing the nicest “mom jeans” ever in that picture?

Also he needs to get a buck with good fronts!  :yike:

The Milk River has produced some dandy whitetails over the years. I see some dandies hunting for pheasants but I can't hunt deer there. They have came back from the disease they had five years or so ago.

2017 my son and I switched from mule deer to whitetail. It was not our plan but the mule deer in our area that we hunt were down and mostly young bucks. We switched to whitetail and wondered why we didn’t do it sooner! We were pleasantly surprised and wondered why we just drove through the river bottoms all those years to go to the mule deer hills.

I got a nice one that year but that picture doesn’t want to load. I spazzed out this year and shot first decent whitetail I seen. Not sure on score but my buddy said 130 to 140 but I could have gotten better if I would have held off the trigger for longer than an hour :chuckle: if you’re hunting central Montana I say go for it. It’s a fun change of pace But i think I will be mule deer minded next fall seen a few nicer ones elk hunting after I got my deer

What Montana unit when you say Milk River?

Thanks for the reply's guys. There are definitely some good whitetails in Montana.  I generally have 3-4 mule deer tags in my pocket each fall and Montana just cant compete with the other states as far as high end potential.  It's a blast to MD hunt there, but I just want to change it up a little.

Those are both great bucks, but I must admit I would shoot that WT if they were side by side.

Check the area around Lincoln.  Fair amount of public and of Sieben ranch which is open for walk in.  Some stud Muleys in the area as well.

When I lived in Montana, this was in the '80's though, a co-worker hunted from a family cabin in the Saltese area and they would bring back whitetails with thick racks.

Yes, all good results from the hunts, but that Nebraska buck is amazing. Pretty much has it all!

Thanks for sharing the images with us,

Right on. Its a great deer regardless! I was curious because I have a friend who has been talking about giving Nebraska a try for deer. If it happened we would most likely be on our own and on Public land.
