so if you had to choose a factory rifle that was in the $300 ball park which would it be.

marlin xl7 or xs7
stevens
h&r handi rifle.

if there are anymore please list them...

i baught my dad a h&r a couple seasons ago and its a decent gun. they are just a little heavy for my liking. but for $225 you cant really complain.

stevens is a savage without accutrigger. thats where i'd be....hands down.

where i would really be is all over jason's winchester model 70 .270 in the classifieds for 375.00
or there was a couple $300 vanguards in there too.

I'd opt for walmart first. They have weatherby vanguards on clearance for $300 even. The M.V. had one in 7mm mag and 300wby as of last night...have the synthetic tan "speckled" stock.

Next choice would be a Stevens. The plastic stock is junky, but you get the savage action and easy of swapping barrels. Good aftermarket support and a good track record. Can be had new for under $300 after tax.

I also have a handi-rifle or two. Great shooters...my .204 will shoot sub .75" @100yds all day. The only problem is it is sensitive to how you rest it on the bags, and if you take the handguard off and don't torque it back to the exact same spec your POI will be off...a little or a lot...

The Stevens rifles that I've played with, realy impressed me for the small price tag on them.

The Stevens 200 is a great gun for the money and if weight is one of your concerns, it comes in about 6.5 pounds. It was NRA rifle of the year in 2005 and is the best value for young people and those who want one all around rifle without spending $500+. I will be getting one in 7mm-08 later this year. Good luck and let us know how it shoots if you get one. I know of 4 or 5 guys who have them with no complaints.

I picked up a Stevens in 308 recently off this board for a youngster who is new to hunting...its accurate and good to carry...and easy shooting.

The stevens for the money is a pretty decent but I'd probably opt for the handi rifle just for it's versitility. For 300 you could essentially have 2 guns... new handi rifle and a an extra barrel.

Shot a Stevens 270 win yesterday and it was a great shooting rifle. It actually outperfored a NEW KIMBER Montana!

The Kimber is fustrating. 2 good shots then a wild one. The 270 and a Remmy 770 in 308 both out perform.

I've heard kimbers can vary a lot from copy to copy. some shoot and some won't.
savages/stevens are great shooters pretty much always. B.W. you should have kept the one that lives in my safe now...it is the same as the stevens.

I shopped around $300 rifles for a while before i chose one for my wife. I got the Stevens in 7mm08 out of walmart. She loves it. It's light and it fits.

I had a 30-06 Stevens and it was a great gun. My dad has a Stevens in 300 win mag and he loves it. Great guns no matter what the price.

I have no first hand experience but have heard some good reports of the Mossberg 100 ATR's.
I'm not sure of MSRP, but I see some on gun broker in the $300 range.

i saw them at black sheep last weekend in clarkston for 359 or so i think. if i remember it was a 300wm, maybe that makes the price go up a little.
also saw the howas for 359 at tri state.

If I was looking to spend 300 bucks on a rifle, I would hit every pawn shop, and used gun shop in the area, and see what they have. Find that Remmy or Browning that just needs some TLC. As long as the stock is not broke, and the barrel has not been messed with or shot out, it will shoot.

Sportman's warehouse has a 7mm mag and 300winmag for $249. They have all the others for $269-289 IIRC. Not sure why the mags are one clearance, but they are flawless.

This is the burlington, WA store...BTW.

--EDIT-- Holy crap! They've raised the prices to $289-$319!
They still have the 7mm and 300 mags for $249 each, though!
