Rebarrel ?
« on: December 14, 2018, 05:35:54 AM »
Ok so I know nothing about smithing or DYI rifle mods. My wife has a Remington 700 sps youth .243, we wanting to get a little more pep from her rifle. Can we just get a new barrel in 7mm-08 or 6.5 creed? Do we need a new action also? Thanks!!

Yes you can get a new barrel in any short action chambering with the same bolt face.  7/08 6.5 C ,308 , ect
https://www.howlforwildlife.org/take_action  It takes 10 seconds and it’s free. To easy to make an excuse not to make your voice heard!!!!!!

Just a barrel & Smith work. Personally for what you would spend on the barrel change, I would keep the 243 as is & purchase another rifle. You can pick up a TC compass in 6.5 creedmoor right now for a little over $200 with the rebate & be into it under $300 by the time it’s shipped to your ffl dealer here & you pay the transfer fee & tax. Lots of good reviews on a feature filled entry level rifle & tons of ammo choices for a 6.5 creedmoor. There are also other entry lever choices as well under $500.

If goin through the trouble to rebarrel you might as well true the 700 action, bed a new stock & put a new trigger in. Now your talking money I doubt your interested in getting into? :twocents:

 :yeah:

Or sell the 243, and buy the rifle you want. It's a lot of money to rebarrel a rifle.

So this is what I was thinking and just swapping the barrels, she has a floor plate and the ones on sale are ADL's (no floor plate)

If it still requires a bunch of smithing I'll just bring it in and have some work done. The options for a high end rifle suck for women. There are some good ones out there but finding the right caliber is a b*tch. Browning told me availbility for their options will be mid to late 2019 so I'm exploring other options. She didnt like the ruger or savage and doesn't want a wood stock so out goes the Weatherby Camile.

pick a different bullet and handload for the .243.  That's the cheapest way.

I don't mind putting $$ into the rifle as we're considering a new one for her anyways. If I can get the caliber barrel she wants and do some other improvements I'd be okay with that too.

Point me in the right direction to get this done! Can I do it myself or should I send it out to a smith?

I am in the process right now.  Sent my barreled action to benchmark barrels a month ago.  They will true the action and install another barrel for around $850.  From there the little things start to add quickly, new trigger, picatinny rail, cerakote, muzzle brake, stock.  So you should figure out how much you are willing to spend and decide from there.  You might not gain much of anything from just installing a new barrel.

If you have the skills to headspace a new barrel and inlet the stock there a what is called a "Remage Barrel" it is a Rem. 700 Barrel with a nut to adjust the headspace and lock the barrel in place, no need for a lathe to install a barrel.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.
