Any pointing Labs?

I recently lost my hunting partner in a tragic situation. I am looking to get a pointing lab but it must look like a lab:) Any leads is greatly appreciated

You could also contact the NW Pointing Lab Club, or any number of trainers and see what they are seeing in dogs from local breeders. There are lots of resources at your finger tips. I love pointing labs, good luck!

My dog is not from tiger mountain, but his dad is. Both are excellent dogs, jve never trained the pointing into mine, but he does it naturally. Lots of good reviews from their kennels.

Would absolutely recommend tri lab kennels. Would tell you to flee tiger mountain. I would rather have no dog than a tiger mountain dog. Sutter Bay retrievers in Salem Or would be a great option as well. Sorry to hear of your loss.

10mm I was looking at trilab and it looks as if he has some litters with tiger mtn bloodline. Are you saying that because of the breeder or the actual pups? Thanks for the comment about my partner he was a good one and in his prime:(

I have a 6 year old pointing lab out of Snake River Pointing Labs. Unfortunately the owners passed a few years ago.

Why would you recommend avoiding Tiger Mountain?

This is my experience with tiger mountain. Some of his dogs may be great but the two I got from him where not good and when I spoke with John I did not get the impression he was being honest with me.

My first lab from John wrecked his knee during his first hunting season. Being a newbie and having him tell me to contact him with any questions I called and asked him what to do. To which he replied that in 30 years on running dogs he neve had to deal with a bad knee.... seriously never once on dogs that run as hard as labs have you had a knee injury. Second dog died within 6 weeks of coming home despite an assortment of vet attempts to save the little guy. We are not sure where he picked up the parvo that killed him but we had been following the shot schedule and again when we reached out to John we where cold shouldered. I was clear with him I was looking for insite not refund or blaming him for either dog. No dice he swore up and down he never had either issue. Maybe I am just jaded.

 After my experience I asked around the dog community about him and got the “I don’t want bad mouth a guy in a small community but I don’t trust him.” He talks a great game on the sales side and is good at playing to the new guy. I will say the force fetch work he did on my first dog was really effective on a otherwise stubborn dog.

Tiger Mountian may have some good dogs and happy customers. I may have just crapped out on both dogs and pulled the short straw twice. However to me the mark of any good business is how they handle customers after the sale and what the reputation is in their respective industry. Neither standard does tiger mountian hold up to.

I would say if Sean at Tri Lab is comfortable breeding with a tiger mountian dog you can be confident in the breeding. Sean’s dogs are top notch. I am hunting over a pair of 10 year old labs of his that are still going strong.

As a side note the tiger mountian and sutter bay dogs tend to be taller leggy dogs and tri lab tend to be a little shorter and stockier dogs. I like the taller dogs for open field work and the overall look of the dog. I know looks are a secondary concern but the more info the better when you are finding your next hunting buddy.

Pointing dogs aren't my thing but if i was in the market I'd reach out to the APLA folks here in WA. They have dedicated group of knowledgeable folks who would love to talk dogs with you. I'd also reach out to Julie Knutson (sp?) as she seems to be the go-to trainer for pointing labs.

Get involved with the APLA group their members have dogs from the mentioned kennels and litters are you can attend a training day and see what dogs come from where. Take your time and do your research and it will pay off.

I got my pointing lab from Lankas Labs in Kansas.  Fantastic pet and a good hunter (3yrs old)....  I also got a pudelpointer from marshland gun dogs out of MN and he is a great pet and hunter. (1yr)... If you want a versitle dog that is a balls out hunter/pointer and doesn't shed go with a pudelpointer.  Great family dog too.  While I love my lab and currently trust him more in the field, the PP is an absolute stud and will overtake the lab based on drive.  They are both great in the house and I have a 2yr old and a 6 mo old kids.  Great temperament.  (Wife got pregnant and I got a dog each time, some weird nesting right there!)
