Ok that was a joke. Honestly I’m buying it on a short like gun and my plan is to just carry when I’m not really hunting but something may need shot. Checking trail cams and such but also possibly my wife may shoot a deer with it.

Lots of cheap ammo available.

jdb, I don't load the 7.62X39, but a buddy carries one for the same reason you want it for. He uses sierra a .308 125gr FNHP and H4198 powder good groups out to 200 yards in a CZ bolt gun.  :twocents:

I wouldn't worry too much about the load. Shooting the cheap bulk ammo is half the fun of the cartridge.

As for deer, I dunno. Federal Fusion maybe?

Usually the ""7.62 Russian" is the 7.62x54R.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7.62×54mmR

The 7.62x39 rarely gets referred to as the 7.62 Russian

I just looked at a Howa Mini in 7.62x39 today and it looks like a nice little rifle.  I shoot a 6.5 Grendel in a Howa Mini which is a former  wildcat 6.5 based on the 7.62x39 case.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

now that you say that I knew that about the Russian thing. Sorry for the faux paux. If I could find a Grendel I'd probably buy that instead but I can't find one that fits my criteria. So I can load .308 caliber bullets? I thought I was stuck with .310/.311? Sorry if that's a dumb question.

I have a cz 527 in 7.62x39, it's a blast to shoot. It does well with just about everything I've put through it.

When it comes to handloads, my favorite powder is CFE BLK, hands down. I can get 2550 fps out of that short barrel with a 125gr sierra, with no pressure signs(my load is hotter than hodgdon's book max though) The only other powder ive tried is reloder 7, which is really dirty stuff in comparison.

I would really like to try some. 308 bullets to see how they perform as you don't have a lot of. 310/.311 bullets out there to choose from.  The 125gr nosler would be great in that cartridge if it will shoot accurately out of a. 311 bore.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

My first choice would be the CZ 527, second would be the Howa 1500 mini action. I'm not a big fan of the Ruger American action, but the Ruger American Ranch takes Mini-Thirty mags so you have more options for magazines.

What are you looking for in a Grendel bolt gun that isn't covered by either the CZ or Howa?

The Cz barrel length are an issue for me.(I have a 527 in .223 and love it!) the howa just doesn't do it for me. I have nothing against them I had one and it was a fine gun just not what I'm looking for right now. The rarr really appeals to cost and I just wanna play with one

I am confused??? Isn't the 7.62(x54R) Russian as in the Nagant bolt gun?  The 7.62x39 is primarily found in SKS and ak47 variants?? 2 completely different rounds.
