cougar eats persons dog while they are walking it

I hike with my young son in the Olympic park and forest area, as well as in Hoodsport. My wife and I have been talking about how to prevent an attack and what to do if we are in a similar situation with our children. She said she'd rip its throat out with her teeth, so I guess I don't have to worry about my response. It's a shame my son can't run around on the trails and enjoy his youth without concern over a fatal encounter with an uncontrolled predator population. My wife says I can't get him a pistol, so I guess we'll just have to sharpen her teeth.

Well my suggestion is keep your son close.  I have had a cougar chase my dog back towards me but upon seeing me it fled. I was packing. If not a pistol then pack bear spray or one of those air horns to scare it off. It's easy yo say I will choke it rip its throat out when it's the size of a Chiwawa. Bit chances of that happening are nill
More than likely you will never see a cougar, but will you risk that?

If they were hound hunted, even catch and release, it would not be an issue.

This happens more and more often and I would like to see WDFW address the issue.  Do they have anything going on or was their last action to roll over and play dead when the hound hunting issue came up?  It seems like the seasons, bag limits such could be expanded, tag costs lowered, etc, as well as a public campaign on the value of running dogs to protect people from the overpopulation.  (AKA, do what the other states do as well as their charter by managing the wildlife).

WDFW's highest priority and commitment is to eliminate hunters by over-protecting predators.  There is no other explanation for their asinine policies.
