16 elk points
« on: December 25, 2018, 11:56:38 AM »
Looking for a unit that has a real good chance of getting a 360+ bull. Heard several units. Looking for info from someone who has been in or hunted the unit their talking about in the last few years. Been banking points for elk and deer for awhile now and it’s time to put in before I get to old to do it. 16 for elk and 17 for deer.

Welcome to the forum. :hello:

I assume you are talking east side. What method are you looking to use?

You should have been putting in the last 16 years.  Few units that are gonna have that kind of potential are impossible draws.  You missed out on 16 opportunities to draw them already.  360 is a magnum bull and not very common, even in top tier units.  If you go into one of these hunts with that kind of expectation you will be sorely disappointed :twocents:  good luck in this coming seasons draws

Yes, welcome!  I’m just poking fun, karl is 100% correct.  The quality has gone down in some of the most popular big bull units, your goals were my goals, but not anymore. You’d be better off trying for an archery permit and just enjoying the hell out of the hunt.  With 24 points this year, I’m hoping for a late rifle mud flow tag!!

I hear Mountain View is pretty good....

In all seriousness I would focus on areas you know or are going to learn. Even with the best permits in wa it’s not a gimme by any means to get a good bull.

There are 360 bulls on the east side still. But you have to have the means to go to the steep deep stuff and get them out some how. I have 18 points for quality and bull elk and apply every year with the same outcome. Not selected! Good luck this year.

I hear and know it’s not a give me. I just want to get any info I can so I don’t go on a bad choice. I’ve been hunting MT for 22 yrs and WY for 13. They both have raised their prices. I’ve done real good in both states. Rifle east or west here. Again just want to put in for a unit where there is some good bulls and hope I get drawn soon

I did that one year. Freezer was full of moose meat (ok three freezers) and I had a MT tag, Idaho, and Wa.  Go figure, same year.   Lots of bulls walked.   Saved me some packing.

Good luck with your quest!   Washington has some amazing bulls.

16 points is about average so figure at best 1/30 chance for nice bull units or 50% chance of drawing in next 30 years.  Seriously.

1/30 is much better than 1/100. I’ve been hearing about the Dayton for elk and the Desert for deer. A friend of a friend got a real nice buck there this year

This thread should be mandatory reading during hunter safety class.
