Polaris Sporstman Accessories
« on: December 27, 2018, 10:30:47 AM »
I have a '06 Polaris Sportsman Quad. I want to put some money into the machine before spring and was hoping for some advice. It's been a great machine and has never let me down, but she needs some TLC.

The quad already has a front brush guard and winch and I am planning on putting new tires street legal kit and new brakes. What else do I need? I definitely want a light bar. I was contemplating a 2" lift kit and larger tires, but am hesitant to lose a lot of power. Opinions? How about other upgrades? Exhaust? Aftermarket shocks? Let me know what you have done and loved or hated. Pictures welcome! I use the machine in the snow and mud in spring and then all fall in all conditions. Rocky roads, mud, sand, you name it. Help me spend some money!

Thanks for any input.

Clint

I would start with the normal maintenance things.  Reliability.  Probably could use a new belt, plugs/tuneup, brake pads oils in ALL units.  Then I would put largest AT tires preferred radials that fit.  I wouldn't lift because you will need to clutch it for oversized tires, eat wheel bearings and cv axles will be stressed and prone to breaks.  LED bars are GREAT and can be cheap online.  Winch is required.  Heated grips, trunk bags/seats are great.  Shocks are $$ but a good upgrade for sure.  Chasing HP with exhaust and jets or tune reflashes usually leads to very little changes for the $ spent.  An air filter, slip on pipe and jet kit good bang for buck (Probably $500) but I doubt you notice a big change.  Few HP felt on high rpms and some grunt low from pipe.  Tires will be huge, 26-28" radial or maybe light mudder…  Make sure to read reviews and imop most important is the weight of tire.  Some are really heavy and rob much HP and are tough on quads suspension parts with unsprung weights.  A Maxxis Zilla and Mud Light are light good mud AT tires.  Bighorns and Blackwater are radial and good AT with Blackwater being heavier, tougher and more rough/aggressive.  Many good AT tires like a Bear Claw HTR as well or even Tusk terra's from Rockymntatv.  Shop Rockymntatv for great service and great $, I do!  Honestly If it was my atv I would put led bar on bumper, set wheels 1" wider offset and some Bears or Bighorns in 27 or 28".  Quiet slipon exhaust with jet kit and quality air filter.  Demon heat grips, rear 2 seat Nomad trunk, 3 headlight on mod diode and Rhino grip holders!  After full trans, diff, eng oil synthetic changes.
MAGA!  Again..

All great info! Thanks Mudman. I was definitely going to service everything also, while I have it in my shop and off the ground. I was also looking at the K&N Air Filter and a slip on pipe. Thanks again. I will check out Rockymtnatv!

Hey Mudman, I bought a 2018 Sportman 450 a couple months ago and the salesman cautioned me against doing the headlight mod, saying it can fry the switch. Is it a matter of there being a right and a wrong way to do it, or can it cause problems?

I just bought '18 450 as well.  Yes he is only correct if done wrong.  I got same crap!  :chuckle:  Google the diode mod for 3rd light and you will see a $10 easy cheesy mod!  I plan to do soon as well.  My 850 does it stock, go figure?  I also bought the Nomad trunk/seat and kids love it.  Much safer for 2nd rider especially lil ones!

Put Terrabite tires on your quad. You can get then from Rockymountainatv.com They're 8 ply tires and you won't have to worry about flats.

LED bars or light pods is all you need and don't have to worry about burning up wires.

Hand signals and a bicycle horn is all you need to be street legal. If you install it all wired unit will cost you close to $500 if someone else does it. You have to get a certification from a shop too for no more than $50.

Your quad has plenty of power to do rocks etc. Just put a Dalton Clutch Kit in it. The kits are around $75 plus a 1/2 hour install time. That's what I did with my 2015 Can am 500 XT with 45 horsepower. Big difference. It puts the power to the ground.

Maybe 2 inch wheel spacers. That's all I would do to it. You don't want to dump money into a machine that's only worth $2000. It is 13 years old.

Yes I am sure we did.  The price was pretty good eh!  Did you buy the gray one?  If ya hear a rattle its under front of front seat.  The air intake snorkel touching the bottom of plastics FYI.  If EPS light comes on and eps quits working cycle key.  It is a weak Battery.

Mine is green, non EPS. Took delivery back in October. When I took it to Idaho, I could hear a rattle at low speeds as I was going over some bigger rocks. I’ll have to check out under the seat.

Thanks CAMPMEAT! Appreciate the advice. I like the sound of 8 ply. I travel some roads with pretty sharp rocks, and a little extra protection would be nice.

I got a new light bar for christmas, buddies have them on their quads, makes a huge difference.

I'm contemplating tires now for mine, I've got a 04.5 sportsman 600, dont want to kill power so I'm gonna stick with 26" tires.

I did a k&n with a dynojet kit. Made a difference, but wasnt night and day. I'll probably put in a epi clutch kit in it chasing a bit more low end grunt.
One of my favorite "mods" done was getting a good plug kit with a small compressor on the bike. Got stuck 18 miles from camp with a flat years ago and killed a bunch of time waiting for someone to go get stuff to fix it.

I added 28x11” tires at all 4 corners, did a pipe and upgraded my pinion gear cover, not sure if it’s an issue on smaller quads but the 1000 needs it done. I also added a 28” light bar but it’s not in the picture.

Syoungs yikes! I carry a small air compressor with a cigarette lighter plug along with fix a flat and some other tools so that doesn't happen. A plug kit is a good idea too! Thanks for the reply. Im leaning towards 26" tires also. I'm going with a K&N, Ill have to check out the Dynojet kit.

Scvette that's a good looking machine! I think 28's would be too much for that 500 to turn. I do like those tires though. What pipe did you put on?

Campmeat those are sweet machines! I want one. Either a Razr or Arctic Cat 1000. Maybe next year after I sell some other toys.
