Recommended ammo for an 870 with modified choke?
« on: December 27, 2018, 11:45:13 AM »
Bought my first gun for hunting this year: a Remington 870 wingmaster 12 guage, 2 3/4 with a fixed modified choke. Now that the hunting bug has bit, I can't wait for spring to come around to bag some bigger birds.

I'm thinking I can make this barrel work under 25 yds with the right type of ammo, but my inexperience brought me here to get some opinions from this awesome community.

My research has led me to Federal #6s with flitecontrol wad. Obviously, all guns are going to shoot a bit differently, so I'm  planning on patterning my shotgun this weekend. What other rounds should I bring?

I would personally pick up some Winchester Double X #5's since you're shooting a 2 3/4" barrel.

Unfortunately, It seems they only have the 2 3/4 in buckshot  :dunno:

You can do better than 25 yards.  PM sent.

MtnMuley was referring to this, or #5 birdshot which could be SuperX if I remember correctly.

I've always liked #5 for turkey, have shot a bunch with my 870, though it has a full choke.  Just buy a couple boxes and try them out at different ranges.  I've never seen a heck of a lot of difference when I have patterned my shotguns.  The ammo seems to be pretty consistent if using the same choke.  :twocents:
